#942141 PvP Season Update Completed

Posted by DorkLord on 29 July 2015 - 17:28 in General Discussion

Just an idea out of left field - If the developers are at all considering revamping the available mercenaries, perhaps that could be rolled into a new NPC class that would be available for PvP Seasons as well. Give them decent gear and attributes for their level, and seed them with random amounts of gold and perhaps even an odd chest drop with a potion or a piece of gear. Make some of them really hard to beat, others can be lousy at defending themselves. The system could place buffs on them at random times. They can be hired as Mercs and also be available as Seasons targets, and the auto-bounty would apply. Might add some incentive to do Seasons, depending on the rewards, and it makes the pool bigger and still allows for opt-out. Heck,  you could even take a snapshot of the current Seasons player pool and just rename the characters.

It's more PvBot at that point, but there would still be real players in the mix.

If you want players to opt-out, it should cost them (via PVP protection). Even, make it so that it protects XP, gold and gear. With this, players are getting free protection. Isn't that seriously wrong?

How is it seriously wrong? Do you not still have the option for unrated attacks? In real life, if I don't want to get mugged, I stay out of bad neighborhoods. I sleep in a secured building. I put away my valuables. With the system as it was, I could be mugged at any time, at random. I could be putting my pants on, and someone smacks me and takes my wallet. I'm not on the way to the bank with bags of treasure. I'm not in a bar looking to pick a fight. You can't see the difference? This is like Thunderdome or the Coliseum, and the gladiators want another handful of unarmed peasants thrown in to slaughter. I guess it doesn't occur to some that there are people who just don't want to be in the brawl. I've always paid for PvP protection for just that reason - it was the only way to avoid (most of) it.

Edit: My thought for a more effective PvP system would be that if there were those interested in being gold thieves, then make it more interesting and challenging. Hunt victims like SEs. Use stam to walk around your nearby levels and find other players on the combat list. Come and find us in the realms, check our stats and our gold, then smack us while we sleep if that's how you roll. The more honorable thing to do would be to find online players and issue a challenge for their gold and the battle is on or the player bribes you to just go away. Let a person draw a weapon. The whole idea of having a list of available rich players in the neighborhood to go after with a button push seems to take much of the challenge out of it - that's how it was before this. Having them served up at random is just silly. Those who really want to go toe-to-toe need something like the Arena or this Seasons system in some form, but I don't think you get to be the best fighter among fighters by slaughtering the townsfolk or robbing the unarmed.

You also realize it was the first day right?

I'm not sure what difference it makes. PvP is just that - player vs. player. To me that means that both parties are aware of the conflict. This is player vs. sitting duck. If I'm hunting, I'm involved in gameplay and I know that gold thieves may be looking out for me. When I'm offline and in stam gear, I know that I'm taking a chance on a hit, so I hold no gold and I have PvP protection to make me a less juicy target (while there was still Prestige). Now - this is just drive-by shootings. It's random, or, depending on your level range, not at all random and the same players hit you over and over because you're their only target. The fact that there are not enough players in the game to support a rich, active PvP doesn't really justify pulling in inactives, naked players, and random innocents. Sure, hunt me down and smack me for gold if that's what you're into and it's allowed in the rules. I accept that. But this whole thing of just punching around everyone? It puts a bad taste in my mouth. I started smacking inactives who were missing gear and thought "Why am I doing this?"  "Because I can." was not a good enough answer.

Please someone explain to me the necessity for opt out. What are you losing for being opted in? XP no, durability no? I believe the only thing you can take away from pvp now is stamina usage. Opt out just lessens the playing field. I want to hear someones argument that's adamant about having opt in and opt out. Also add back xp loss/durability loss then... Believe its a fair trade.

When you're in the mix and being hit constantly through random matches, you can't hunt, make guild deposits, or do anything with gold. I hunted last night and lost 400K gold from a rated attack. With unrated attacks, sure I expect to be a target when I've got some gold on hand, but when you get hit every 2 minutes, you just can't get rid of it fast enough. I did try the Seasons and I opted out. I see no skill involved, no challenge, and there's no appeal to me.

Hi, and thanks for your continued work on this! I'm having an issue with the combat evaluator. It always shows a massive excess of damage. Screenshot attached. My current character damage is around 6000.

Edit: It doesn't like my screenshot. Evaluator says I have 33000 extra damage, yet I can't 1-hit the creature. Can email it to you if you like.

I am the jerk in question, just so you all know. lol

And you got all of 80 gold from your second attack. Have fun with that. Nope, no bullies here. Just having fun. I'm out.

So you're just going to pass judgement on all of us because of one jerk?  Should I judge all of Erildath because of some jerk that sends me nasty messages?  No...   If you think this is the start of something sinister, do the smart thing, call in the boss.... but don't class all of us with some fool with a happy trigger finger.  it's totally unfair.....

Penny,

I've read a lot of your posts, and I respect you and your form of play. I want to say that up front.

Now let me say this.  I've played this game for three years now, and I have never had a 'good' interaction with a PvPer. How is that supposed to make me feel?  I had one return gold once when I messaged him and basically thanked him for ruining my day.  I've been hit a couple of times while online, and I took those hits in stride as I deserved them.  The rest?  I'm always hit when I'm offline, in stam gear, with very little gold.  Why?  The prestige line is bull, since the last couple I looked at had something like 300+ prestige already.  These are not random levelers.

That's what I can't understand. I can understand the thrill you might get in finding somebody on a hunt with a bunch of gold and plucking some.  I would never do it, but I think I can wrap my head around it.  I think a lot of people just slap other players because they can. Because it makes them feel good.  Should I be happy that somebody stole my gold? (And my XP if I don't pony up the money?)  Should I just say "Oh, haha, it's just a part of the game to get screwed over by another player."  Because that's what it is.  You stole from me.  You feel good about it.  I don't.  I never will.  No, it's not real money and I'm not going to have a hissy fit, but it makes me not want to play the game.  You and others have explained several times that it's a part of the game I signed up for.  I comprehend that.  I don't have to like it.  Explaining all the logical reasons why PvPers need more targets does not make the targets more accepting.

There already is a risk for anyone who attacks another player. The risk is they will lose 5 levels for that one hit. I don't see why anyone would want to call pvp "criminal" though, since that would make the game criminal?

Sorry, but this is not how it works. Not with the majority of what I've seen. Post the attacking player on the bounty board and they hit you again because they know who posted them. Or follow you around and hit you every chance they get. Or get their friends to hit you. Or send taunting messages telling you do "do whatever you have to - it's all good". I have checked the profiles of the people who have attacked me, and I don't think I've seen a single one who hasn't declared themselves a PvP'er.  Levelers looking for prestige is a bit of a myth.  Prestige is useless for leveling.  I can do better with buffs, so I don't bother spending the stam to hit somebody.

...and moments after I made my post, I am hit. I have PvP protection active, and only a handful of gold, so I've lost basically nothing but a few coins to repair my gear.  I really don't care anymore.

I get the point. Don't participate. Don't confront or you will be attacked. Yep, I'm sure it was coincidence.

#920598 please extend pvp attack range

I'll probably regret this, but here goes.  I think there's a fundamental disconnect between levelers and PvPers and the way they think.

As a leveler pretty much exclusively, I have this to say to PvP'ers in general.  I don't like you.  Not you personally, at least I don't think so, since I don't know you, but I don't like your choice to prey on other players. Find a place where you can test your skills against other willing players, but calling offline, unbuffed players "targets"  and reveling in "attacking" them is weak. It's the act of a mugger, a common criminal, and, yes - a bully.  I understand all of the points given - people going offline with gold in hand, whatever makes you happy about these useless "prestige" points, but can any of you honestly say that this is something you'd do outside of the game?  I come here to relax and have fun, and logging in to find that I've been pummeled by some innocent PvP'er who's just looking for gold or prestige is not "fun" for me at all.  It is stealing, plain and simple, and whether it's inside or outside of the game, I think you will find that many people just don't like it.  It's insulting.  It's that simple.  Trying to legitimize what is by definition a criminal element in the game is not going to get much traction with those who are the victims.  Sure, there are ways to retaliate, but what if I don't want to play that way?  Then I have to pay "protection money" or just "get over myself" or leave the game.  I have tried to retaliate through bounties - which just leads to me getting hit again by a coward when I go offline and my buffs expire. Hey - if I'm on a hunt and I'm dumb enough to have a million gold on me, by all means have a go at me. It's part of the game and I get that. I'll put you on the BB. Hitting me while I'm offline is a cheap shot.

And those who try to justify it by saying it's like a mugging in real life?  It's not.  It's more like a home invasion.  In a mugging, at least I have a chance to see my attacker and perhaps struggle or hit back, or I could stay out of questionable neighborhoods and lock myself in my home at night.  Not here.  Here you can look at a simple list to tell you where your victims are and how much money they have, and you don't even have to break into the house.  You can check and see what they're wearing and what protection they have before you even start out. Smash 'em over the head and take their wallet.  Where's the challenge?

Speaking only for myself, I can't even wrap my mind around why others would want to attack and steal from other players when they're asleep.  I just can't do it.  I would get no enjoyment out of it whatsoever, so I don't.  But it's allowed in the game and I will deal with whatever the developers decide.  I'd be in favor of opening up the 'opportunities' for the criminals if it were restricted to online players only, or if offline players maybe had their stats and buffs hidden.  Cloak them.  At least then the attacker is taking some sort of risk because they can't assess the defensive position of the target or their ability to hit back.

This may be completely unrelated, but I did get a strange message from Cloudfare or somebody with my first successful login - it said something like verifying my browser against DDOS attacks.  Could some of us be getting blacklisted? Just a thought. I log in and out throughout the day.

Same thing in Chrome. I can log into the forums, but not the game.

"Create Account" does the refresh as well in Chrome. The Shop link works.
