Suggestion for improvement:
The log message notification should pop up on the chat page, like it does on the world map page.
Since the chat is constantly refreshing to fetch new content, I would think it is possible to do this.
Thanks.

I think we know why we get banned....for our own ill-thought out behaviour. The Mods are pretty good at warning before muting.
DP
This is why an ignore button poses problems. Add an iggy button and it will take about a half second for someone to ignore some or all mods. If someone has a mod on ignore and is acting inappropriately, the mod will not be able to warn them unless the mods are exempt from ignore.
Screenshot everything!

The way I see it is, if an ignore option was added, and someone chose to ignore mods, they would be accepting the fact that they will no longer receive warnings. So, it would be their risk to use the ignore feature in this manner.

Or they don't like mods being selective in how and with whom they enforce the rules with.... Why wasn't there an application process for mods anyhow?
There's only a few that are repeatedly issues with. Most of them do a good job. Why not some fresh faces?

If you believe certain moderators are not acting in the best interests of the community by all means submit a support ticket to the cows providing evidence of such malpractice.

It's my opinion that the Moderators should be evaluated by the community periodically on these points:
1) Are they involved with World Chat in a manner that makes it a welcoming, positive and helpful environment? *
2) Do you feel they try to apply the rules fairly, without prejudice, but also with patience? **
3) Are problems dealt with in a way that is respectful?
- -
* I truly think that is the biggest service they can provide the game. We also have a lot of mods that do not participate anymore in Global Chat, or rarely.
** I say patience, as seeing newbs slammed verbally by the mods in World Chat and banned for asking for buffs - which I've seen - is just appalling. Newer players need to be taught gently and if there is a pattern of problems - fine, then deal with it, but deal with it in a manner that is respectful of the individual and use private messaging more than public humiliation.
I've never been chastised by a Mod, nor have I given them much opportunity as I only rarely look in there, and even more rarely comment. Part of my lack of involvement is because when I do I have the unfortunate bad luck to look in there I seem to always do it when a Mod seems to be having a bad day and sharing their bad mood. Is this true of all the Mod's? Certainly not! Is it true of all Mod's all the time, no. A generally consistency of mood and application of the rules would be a positive, however, but even more so a light and chattiness would brighten things.
I'm not saying this because I want to be a Mod, while I can be extremely fair, I'm not good at banter. I do think Mod's should be individuals consistently accepted as leaders within the game. Interestingly the Mod's are not all leaders as designated by their peers, thus I do think more Guild Founders and Leaders would be beneficial.
Hmmmm - IDEA:
Keeping up with Global Chat is a burden. Why not have all GF's and 2-3 people they nominate into a pool of potential Mod's. Allow those individuals to bow out - if they don't want to do it. Also provide a private vote (no results posted) where we the community can vote for or against the people on that list and in conjunction with that have all of the potentials complete a survey program (there are many free ones) answer how they would handle certain scenarios. By this approach the nominees don't know if the vote or their answers were the problem. Have those that pass everything tossed into a rotation of Moderating Global Chat and if the timing is bad for them, they can opt out and drop to the bottom of the rotation list. Perhaps beforehand HCS can determine the total # of Mod's they want in the rotation, and they could even decide to keep the current Mod's.
By the way, I say GF's because they are already deemed leaders by their peers, and then they know their membership and who contributes the most positively and wisely to their guild chats. People who are used to teaching and building positive relationships are what will serve us all well.
If it was rotated the newer Mod's would have (theoretically) more energy for Global Chat, thus the game is infused with new energy.

No to a voting system, this would just turn into a popularity contest and we would end up with some truly unsuitable people as moderators. The Cows chose people they believed they could trust to do the job in a fair and unbiased way. However, if people do think that folk are not being unbiased or are not operating in the best interests of the community then by all means contact the cows and tell them this but provide supporting data to prove this, simple rantings because you dislike a certain individual will only harm your own case there and in the future.

Global Chat has degenerated into what I feared it would ...
1. Idiots try to take it over
2. Mods aren't covering the chat 24/7
3. Some mods show, shall we say, preferential treatment to certain players.
I don't use the chat - I look in on it now and then - and this is WHY i don't - it's disorganised chaos, unfortunately ...
It would be good if the cows were to look at the whole process and perhaps refine it / adjust it a bit..
Homer : Marge, don't discourage the boy. Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It's what separates us from the animals .. except the weasel.
Eddie Izzard : The National Rifle Association say that guns don't kill people, people do. But I think the gun helps, you know ? I think it helps. I think just standing there going "BANG" - that's not going to kill too many people, is it ?
I don't mean to sound pessimistic, but it seems that everything I eat lately turns to poo ...

I've been keeping away from this thread from a while but after seeing the issues raised I'll say my piece here.
Firstly seeing all the negativity here makes my heart dip as a regular of GC. At first I was cynical, I was thinking it was implemented as a distraction for those people "with not enough to do in game" But I tried it just for fun... and those views quickly changed. I saw it as a new frontier to explore which gave me a chance to interact with many people that otherwise would have gone sight unseen. I seen many folks gain new friends, strengthen existing friendships and even ignite some old rivalries! (and I personally have experienced all 3 first hand...haha!) All things considered I think it's overall a positive thing for the game sure there's a good and a bad side to everything but you wouldn't toss out a whole bushel of apples because it had a couple of bad ones would you?
As for the subject of moderators I'm in favor of expanding the roster as I rarely see them, thus I will readily admit some gaps can be filled. As for their performance? From what I have seen its fair in all honesty. Moderators as a rule are usually pretty good about giving fair warnings for infractions, given the tough thankless job they do. Sometimes we humans make mistakes, it's part of life and Moderators are only human after all.
I'm against a community vote for deciding this stuff though.... dav has explained why in much better words than I could...haha!
Guild leaders, while respected probably wouldn't be the best fit... Running a guild is like a full time job (and some people juggle that responsibility with an actual full time job). I just don't think they'd have the time or want the additional responsibility.
Ultimately the only people with that kind of power and the courage to use it fairly are the folks at HCS! (said dramatically)

There are rules. Follow them and you won't have any problems. It really is as simple as that.
Voting for Mods will not happen. As pointed out, that simply results in a popularity contest. It's of no use to us.
Asking to publicly vent about your muting will not happen either. 1. It is against the rules. 2. Contact Support.
Any further posting bashing the Mods or rehashing these ideas will be deleted.

Sadly those who have been permanently banned were all given several warnings by both the moderators and the Cows and they chose to ignore these warnings and carried on re-offending. I do think that the bans should or could maybe suspension, say banned for a month then can appeal and again their global chat rights as people can repent for their sins and change their behaviour, it is what makes us human. I would like to see this come into place, I mean I can just ban them again if they chose to not alter their outlook on life and repeat their same distasteful behaviour in the chat.

Some carried out their behavior to outside the global chat into other mediums, which explains why there may be perm bans for some. As to others, it's really unanswered. Usually one time issue and a permaban came down. But with some it made sense for the perm bans.... however people advertising at all should be 24 hour mutes, and that almost never happens, which is another reason global chat is dead. Minimal enforcement of advertising is what killed the chat moreso than even the creeping amount of active chatters who were banned or left due to others being banned. That and the bans for people speaking in languages other than English some mods were handing out mutes/bans for, despite it not being against the rules.

As a regular in the chat I can attest to this.
I must say nothing annoys me more than people using it as free add space and I know I'm not alone with those sentiments.
Only real reason I didn't mention earlier that was because I didn't know there was a rule against it..

Read the rules again. It is very much against the rules to use non english in the chat.
If a player has been banned, there is a reason for it. It is not up for discussion. Those who behave themselves don't have any problems.
