Power is out to more than 25,000 homes across Wellington and a ferry has broken loose from its moorings as one of the worst storm in decades batters the region.
All flights, ferries and train services in and out of the capital are cancelled tonight.
The Kaitaki ferry in Wellington harbour has broken its moorings, and staff were unable to bring it back into berth. An Interislander spokeswoman said the ship had been anchored in the harbour temporarily.
The ferry broke free from it's moorings in a 90 knot southerly gust, or 160 kilometre an hour winds, the spokeswoman said.
Emergency services were battling horizontal rain with gusts of up to 140kmh to clear fallen trees, some of which had hit houses and cars, and put out house fires.

Six centimetres of snow blanketed Bombala and the surrounding district on Friday, causing road closures, power outages and cancelled school bus services.
“It’s quite rare that Bombala would receive such a significant snowfall,” said Bureau of Meteorology spokeswoman Miranda Langton.
The downfall closed the Monaro Highway between Bombala and Cooma leaving some drivers stuck in hazardous conditions.
Bombala is a town in south-eastern New South Wales, Australia, approximately 485 kilometres south of Sydney.
