I quit buying them.  Given the imbalances in the game I would never use them for offensive actions and risk losing them.  They really suck for defense against the 40M+ power players, even after special research.  The only real use I have for them is being able to hit higher level aliens, etc.

 

For me no reason to pump more money into the game until they balance it.

 

Now I find with research and build times in days and weeks I'm spending less time in the game.  No reason to build up resources and make myself a target until I need them, so not much to do except capture land and hunt aliens for the speedups.  Maybe once there is a way for an alliance to defend against or even attack higher level players I'll start spending more time in the game.  Right now you hit level 18 or so and and it seems like everyone is just hanging out waiting for builds and research to complete while trying to not get noticed by the overpowered idiots.
