Yeah, Windows 7 has become totally useless in regards to this. How to do it: open a command shell (it should indicate that you are an Administrator in the title-bar of the window). Open notepad from here, which will give you a notepad with full privileges. Now browse to the windows\system32\drivers dir or wherever it goes (it's different on my 64-bit machine at work). Of course, if you can browse into the etc dir and click on the hosts file you're home free, you should be able to edit the file with your admin notepad. If it's hidden (haven't managed to find out how this happens yet), just type etc\hosts in the name dialog to open the file and edit it. One of the other guys are now working 100% in linux, might try to ditch Windows altogether myself soon, would make it easier to synchronise with my home machine, and oh so much easier to actually get work done.

It's not so much about being productive as it is minimising the losing-my-sanity effect of using Windows over longer periods

I was able to open this file; add the data; but when I went to save it said:

"Cannot create the C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file.

Make sure that the path and file name are correct."

I had to right click the file, go into properties, Securities, and change the settings for my general access account to have full permissions because it wouldn't allow me to open this as an Admin... I'm the only account on this laptop, but meh... it worked..

I never had the problem (using http://www.gothaguide.com).

In the near future there may be problems again.

It is hosted on a server in Germany, and the name is for sale.

For the insiders see: http://whois.domaint.../gothaguide.com and/or
http://www.whois.net.../gothaguide.com

I would like to see the forum working (again), so we can add comments. It still points to
http://gothaguide.dyndns.org/ which does not work :( .

If you need another free place for the forum, try http://www.forumer.com
We have our cult forum there for years without problems.
