Characters:

Ven - One of two former village boys Ven is the younger of the two travelers but also the more bolder of the two, preferring to take blunt head on action.

-Intro

We've been wandering around for a couple days now. We used to be two village boys in the Mountain Path but that changed after a while. We used to just be some of the natives that wandered around like everyone else, then they all started to go crazy. Well, all of them that is, except for us. Our village was tucked away in a southern corner of the Mountain Path and whatever made everyone else go crazy seemed to have left us alone. A couple of the village elders even thought it had something to do with the Cathedral of Ways.

Whatever it was, none of that matters anymore. Although maybe the elders were right, maybe it really was because of the Cathedral of Ways. The crazed natives seemed to want to kill anyone and anything associated with the Cathedral. A week or so after it all started happening, the Cathedral came under attack by a horde of Demons and other crazy freaks. One of them looked like a man dressed in full black battle armor and he was carrying a battle mace. There was a lot of people outside of the Cathedral trying to throw them back, but it seemed like nothing could turn the tide for either side.

Nothing could turn the tide that is, until our village decided to step into the fight. Now, we may not be as strong as the rest of the world, but we have our own little sort of magics and weapons that we can use when needed. Apparently the demons and corrupted natives attacking the Cathedral thought there was nobody else here to help them, when most of the fighters from our village went charging in with our weapons and magic, the demon hordes cheered and those of us remaining could hear them all the way from the village.

That cheering was short lived, Ven and I watched as our village's fighters, both of our fathers and my mother included in them, crashed into the demon hordes and break their morale so quickly that some of them even started running back. That somewhat human figure clad in black iron wouldn't stand for it though, any demon, native, or otherwise that tried to flee back took a face full of his mace. They seemed to have two choices, stand and fight to the death, or run back and die under that stranger's black iron mace, and who knows what kind of fate awaited them after dying to that thing?

Something was stirring in the distance behind the strange man, and I could just barely make out some kind of strange flying creatures coming into the fight. Now I may not be exactly sure what they were, but the one in the lead looked like some kind of necrotic rotting dragon, and back then I shuddered at the thought of how something like that could have even been created. The dragon started breathing green fire all over the place, our mystics were able to stop the brunt of his fire from hitting our fighters, but many of the Cathedral's defenders weren't so lucky. They seemed to have priests of some kind trying to stem the demons and fire coming down but there just was not enough of them to really stop it all. A lot of the Cathedral's defenders started getting caught up in the remains of the dragon's fire, and it seemed to latch onto them, almost melting them before our eyes.

Even back then when we were younger, none of this seemed to faze us. We watched on with grim satisfaction, counting every inch of ground that our fighters gained in conjunction with the ones from the Cathedral, and we were barely able to start pushing back the tide of demons.

Suddenly out of nowhere, a few of the demons broke off and started running to our village, and it was undefended. The women and children started running around in a panic, but me and Ven just stayed at the entrance, watching them as they approached.

"Zerav, you ready to go club yourself some freaks?"

I looked at Ven and chuckled, "Ven slow down, we should think about this before we go charging in we have no idea what these things can do."

"Suit yourself Zerav, do your death magic or whatever it is you call that stuff but I'm not going to let them get one more foot without a fight."

I sighed and watched Ven start charging, club at the ready. Now the *death magic* as he had called it would probably be more along the lines of a form of Necromancy. See, my mother is an elder when it comes to our funeral rights, and she is able to summon the dead to defend our village in times of need and has even taught me how to do some of it.

I started my chanting and went into a momentary trance, when my mother taught me I pretty much just had to watch her, because whatever it is we use to summon the dead takes us over while we do it, and we never know how we do it but we just know that we can do it. When I opened my eyes Ven had a couple hundred skeletons fighting with him and the few demons that came charging at us were quickly overwhelmed. He looked back at me and grinned, but I was almost completely exhausted. He must have realized that and came back to help me, I just waved him away.

"I'm not inept Ven, I can walk on my own."

"Whatever you say Zerav, but even I can tell that summoning like three hundred freaking skeletons would take a lot out of you, heck I'm surprised you didn't die doing it!"

"Whatever, but come on, we should go help the Cathedral and I don't know how long these skeletons will stay moving."

"Yeah, yeah, we probably should but what about the village? Do you think they might come back and try again?"

"Hmm... you know you might be right, here let me try something real quick."

I closed my eyes again and my chanting started, this time it was much quicker than what it had been before. I opened my eyes after maybe three or four seconds, and there was a dozen skeletal archers standing guard outside of the village, ready to take on anything that came this way. I nodded to Ven and we started off on our way to the Cathedral.

When we started getting nearer to the raging fight we saw just how weak the Cathedral's defenders were getting, we barely had a dent in our fighters but the demons seemed more intent on destroying the Cathedral of Ways itself than bothering with the natives cutting into their flank. Before we even reached the fight however, a sudden tide of warriors started pouring out of the entrance to the Cathedral. I'm not sure where they came from or how, but they were all wearing different kinds of armor, looking like they were coming from all over the world. They even looked to be stronger than the people defending the Cathedral, they looked like simple priests and knights in steel armor, definitely not like the people that were now coming out to aid them.

We were getting a lot  closer to the fight now, the front line of skeleton warriors was maybe 30 feet from our own fighters. I noticed a weaker part in the demons forces that was on the very edge of our own people and ordered the entire legion of skeletons I had to attack that spot, and Ven's bold spirit decided to lead the charge and I couldn't do anything other than hope  he wouldn't get himself killed.

When the skeletons started crashing into the demons and other natives, I saw the black iron clad figure from before once again. He was in the rear of the army on top of a small hill and he seemed like he was chanting something. I watched as something seemed to grow larger behind him, like some kind of giant shadow, and then a ball of black fire shot its way at the Cathedral. The building burst into flames and stared to crumble all around it, most of the human defenders that weren't in an immediate fight for their lives stopped moving and gawked at the ruined building. I turned my attention back to the stranger and he was still standing atop the hill, laughing as he turned back around and left, leaving his legion of demons and natives to try and defeat the rest of the defenders.
