So, when were you guys at HCS going to inform us consumers about your new VAT tax? In case you guys don't know what I mean, you now have to pay ad additional 20% tax for purchacing fsp on top of the taxes you're already paying.

Here is my example of what I mean. When I buy 110 fsp I used pay $20 plus my tax which totaled $22.60. Now when I buy 110 fsp I pay $20 plus my tax plus this additional tax which means I now pay $26 for 110 fsp. So in short, thank you very much.

HCS is a UK company, VAT is a UK tax system, they risk incurring the wrath of the almighty VAT man if they ignore VAT. Which would in turn lead them to losing their backsides.

Doesn't change the need to ensure customers are clearly informed about what they are going to pay, and informed about changes in the way the tax might be implemented.

Having said that, I have exactly the same complaint every time I go to the US (or a US web site) and find that the advertised tax for my meal, clothing, souvenir etc. is typically 8-15% more than was advertised when I committed to buying it. The US sellers are so used to most of their customers expecting this that they don't bother to warn me.

International taxes are always problematical for the non-expert buyer.

Unless things have changed, up until now players outside the UK haven't paid the VAT. As far as I know that tax would only apply to residents in the UK and possibly in the EU(however I doubt it).

The OP does raise an entirely relevant question! The manner with which the question was asked might have intended to use stronger than necessary language. As a consumer however, I would like to be informed if prices, or additional taxes have been added or changed. And this question is more about information than about a complaint, which is what the TOS attempts to regulate.

Anytime you buy something, no matter where on the planet you live, any applicable taxes apply.  In most cases, these taxes are precalculated into the price, but in others, they are added at the end.  This is a part of adult life.  It's not the cows fault if they have to add on a tax, they have to follow the same rules as any other business.....

He mentions it's 20% extra vat ON TOP of the initial tax. I think he's well aware of how taxation works, thank you very much.

The law changed as of the 1st january that all digital goods now charge VAT  but this should only affect buyers within EU countries

So my question is, are we still "donating" or are they calling it something else?

Very interesting, but probably very important differentiation there ...

If we are "DONATING" to the game, then we shouldn't be paying any taxes on said donation.

The cows have said all along that we don't purchase fsp's from them, that we donate to the cause, and they thank us for said donations with a gift of fsp's.

Grey area I'd imagine, but one that, in light on the new law, needs addressing ..

it might not even  affect this game but even charites are bound by this so call it a grey area or not if goods are sold tax is payable ... most companys never needed to apply tax it was only the EU changing the law that mean any online bussiness now has to pay vat regardless of what they make..but again this only applys if ..quoted

EU VAT legislation coming into effect on the first of January 2015 means that anyone who sells digital products online, if they sell to any countries in the EU, will have to charge VAT in the country of the buyer instead of the seller. So far, so simple, but the issue is all tax thresholds have been removed – so selling one item for a £1 means you have to register and keep records for VAT. Britain used to have a sensible policy of exempting any business that turned over less than £81,000 from VAT, but that's now being removed for online businesses.

There's the grey area - the cows have always said that we DONATE to them, not PURCHASE from them - and, if that's the case, the tax shouldn't apply.

Let's see what they have to say, once they see the thread and sort out the crystalline debacle ;)

I sincerely doubt that the VAT man will consider this a grey area.

One of the easiest tax avoidance schemes of the lot is to redefine your product/service to make it tax exempt. That is why it is not simply up to oneself to define the product. There is a direct and consistent link between the volume of payment and the volume of "gift". It is pretty clear that calling this anything other than a sale is just a euphemism.

All the prices shown in our shop are inclusive of VAT (if applicable). This has always been the case and we haven't made any changes to our pricing.
