Kufu’s head snapped in the direction of the door. Everyone here had been marching long enough to know the horn call meant only one thing, the camp was under attack. Kufu growled and left without word.

Soldiers were running in every direction heading to their assigned locations. The buzz converged on the forest side. Several of the Captains were calling for aid. By the time he reached them he could see what all the fuss was about a regiment of Calvary was approaching with a mass of wolves in hot pursuit.

Kufu could feel the vile from the creatures and had no doubt they were warebeasts. They were still out of bow range and the pace the horses were running worked just as well to thin the ranks as horse after horse fell to broken legs.

The screams of the men and women who fell could be heard clearly in the camp now. With a grim set Kufu noted the fallen were actually saving the remaining regiment by slowing the wolf pack to almost a stop as they fought each other to tare the horses and riders apart.

Kufu grabbed a mount and trotted to the line that had formed. He billowed his orders reminding them all that cutting their heads off is the only way to kill them. He caught a glimpse of the banner and cursed. Without word he spurred through the line and charged to meet the Calvary.

The captains commanding the line all swore at the same instant. Noreen shouted louder than the rest “HOLD! HOLD THE LINE! BRACE FOR THE IMPACT” Noreen pointed to Aku “They will be on us in moments and we will need to stop those wolves right HERE!”

Kufu reared his horse up alongside the standard barer and shouted over the thunder of hooves, “Where is Commander Payjen?” The man did not look at Kufu he was grabbing frantically at the horse’s main in every effort not to fall off. Kufu swiveled around on the saddle and looked over the rest of the regiment. Part of the rear was falling back into a second group.

He could see swords flashing again and again as the wolves tried to dislodge the riders. With a grunt he slowed his horse and made for the second group. Kufu Could Hear the Duchess commanding the line behind him. A smile crossed his face and he shouted, “THE HAWLK AND THE PALM”

Several wolves jumped at him as he spanned the distance between the two groups. Heads fell one after another. His horse shrieked and crumpled to the ground it’s front left leg broken… without thinking he sank his sword through the horse’s skull and blocked another wolf with the flat of his sword. Snarls and growls filled the air as more and more wolves surrounded him.

He waited… none of them had attacked since his fall and Kufu was looking for the reason. The circle opened and the Alpha Wolf approached with a vicious grin. In a human voice it said, “Ah Aku the games we play for fun… it’s a shame you did not last until we met again for I would have loved to be the one to kill you in person.”

Kufu spat, “No doubt talk is cheap when you are not here to back it up… now run off I’ve got work to do…” and with a wicked smile he added, “unless you are able to feel this beasts pain then by all means stick around.” Kufu flexed and readied his sword.

The huge beats lunged and Kufu struck slicing the shoulder to the bone. The beast howled and the wolves surrounding him echoed the Alpha’s cry. Blood and saliva dripped from the wolf’s mouth its fangs barred in a contorted grin. It sprang at Kufu again and he simply stepped aside to let the animal pass.

Blood sprayed from the length of its body as the beast disemboweled itself on Kufu’s sword. Intestine and furry flesh lay about the ground. When the Alpha crumpled to the ground Kufu severed its head. The mayhem that broke out from the pack was ear piercing. Every wolf in sight turned and advanced on Kufu.

The battle had been one of those moments when time seemed to move not at all. Well now time was making up for itself. Flashes of fur and blood exploded from every direction. Kufu cut himself a path out of the center. He could barely keep his blade from getting ripped out of his hand as beast after beast crashed into him.

It took him a second to understand what was going on… the wolves were not necessarily attacking him at the moment. They were all headed to the body of the Alpha which was more apparent the further away he got. Kufu smiled… the dang beasts were fighting each other to see who the new Alpha would be.

Kufu turned when someone shouted his name. He knew the duchess’ voice and knew what she intended immediately. He stood still and waited as 50 of the Hawk charged the massed wolves. The thunder of hooves and the howl of beast mixed into a chaotic horror show. The slaughter went quick… the wolves were in a fighting frenzy and could not comprehend their peril.

Kufu flicked pieces of bone and fur off his armor and waited for The Duchess to return. Her helm was down when she approached but you could hear the metallic echo of her curses, “Are you mad? Death will come soon enough… Ggghhhhhh!” Kufu smiled and mounted her horse behind her.

The new arrivals were waiting at the line when they returned….
