Helpers are manually approved players that are designated to help newbies and, on a basic level, resolve conflicts.  A helper character does not play the game as much as it manages it.

More explicitly helpers try to pick up any newbies (with their questions) early on. In addition to this helpers may also mute individual players who behave disrespectfully in-game. A helper may also submit misdemeanor reports, as these would undoubtedly hold more weight than a report from your average Joe.

  • People playing helpers are active community members holding the responsibility that see it as a hobby to assist in the well-being of Eldevin.
  • A helper character is a unique character that receives a unique slot for the account
  • An approved helper gets a unique visual distinction (colorful robe, icon over head)
  • Helper messages in world chat are colored green
  • Helpers may teleport to any town or any player at any time
  • A helper character is formally isolated from the game (level up, sell items) with the exception for solving player problems. As such a person with a helper character may have alts for day-to-day playing
  • All reports (for the upcoming report system) are passed through helpers. As such all of these have been verified before hitting the developers; thus insuring minimal workload for the devs.

As is, with a population of ~300 active players at peaks, I doubt very many Helpers are necessary. I do however recognize how important this may be for the game to hit/maintain well into the thousands.

I like the idea, but how you portray it makes it sound more about the appearance of them than the duties of them. This is basically describing a game moderator. Always a good idea, till they become corrupt. I believe game moderators, when they do come into play, should be switched out after so long, just to make sure they're not corrupted :).

The difference between a moderator and a helper are quite a few:

  • Moderators have minimal involvement with newbies, helpers have plenty
  • For helpers actual moderating is minimal
  • Helpers have very little power, but a lot of flare to stand out in a crowd

The point of helpers is to solidify the idea that a player can use his own free time to assist the community, mostly newbies, in various ways to help retain players. The tools given to him only ease access. Many of these are naturally visual. There are very few ways a helper may misuse his power.

You underestimate the power of mute in a mostly social game.

Sure, muting the guy spamming 'asdlh;flaskjhjwehprohax' more than a couple times is good.

However, the additional rules required to stop spamming of things like trade channel, lfg requests, generic help, etc. to make things 'fair' for everyone (and limit the possibility of corruption), only makes these 'helper' characters seem corrupt (whether they are or not), inconveniences everyone, and makes people who don't read the rules (practically every new player) have to find out the hard way.

Additionally, you can do this NOW without any HCS approval, special distinctions, or other 'feel good' abusable powers. Hang out in Othalo, watch world chat for anyone asking basic questions, whisper them, help from there.

Sorry, but if you want to be a newbie helper, go do it.
