what is the group leveling for and will it disappear once group is dispersed?

if you group level increases you get more xp per kill

Which is good if you are all together, working on the same goal. If you are spread throughout the land and working on different things, the 1, 2, 3% increase to xp is not really worth the loss of total xp from splitting between all party members. Unless you are the bum sitting in town doing nothing....

as i remember, you can get group xp/gold/loot only if you are in the same area

Pretty sure that is correct as people were auto levelling while sitting around doing nothing

I joined a group last week some time. Not one of the other 4 was in the same section of the map as I. Not sure if they were even in the same master map (east or west). I was hunting creatures for xp and not trying to do any quests. My xp per kill went from 540 to under 150. When I left the group, I went back up to 540. How else do you explain that?
