I already saw a couple of other problems that were similar to this one, but with those the whole thing simply doesn't work. I can load the client fine, and log in, but when I press Enter Realm on the character screen the client freezes permanently, and I can click the exit button on the windows till my finger falls off but it won't quit, no "Irresponding program" message or anything.

I think this is because I have no GPU; the client tries to access the GPU to render the screen, but fails because it isn't there. The browser works fine, however, which is probably because I forced WebGL on firefox. I am running Linux, if that matters.

(Trivial: Switching between Software rendering and WebGL rendering in-game does not do anything, even after restarting. There's no locked camera angles in Software, and no change in FPS in WebGL.)

If you locate your graphicsConfig.ini (literally: locate graphicsConfig.ini). You can usually find it in the folder you installed the client in. Note: The browser and client save their graphics config in different places so there might be two on your system.

Open the file in a text editor and you can change the renderer there. The options are:

Renderer = hardware_newt (this is the default)

Renderer = hardware

Renderer = software

Have a go at changing it and seeing if it makes a difference.

It would also be handy if you could provide us the log.txt, but I am guessing it's hanging and not crashing.

I tried that but now I went from being stuck on a black window to stuck on loading splash, you can read my thread which is hot at the moment on here:
