Can someone explain the Need/Greed/Pass system for me?

Need = This is an item that is an upgrade for your character, and it is something you would wear/equip as soon as you get it.
Greed = I don't need this, but I would like to have it for vanity/sale purposes
Pass = I don't want it; the rest of you can fight it out for it.
Keep in mind, some people will "Need" on anything. If you are grouping with strangers, find out in the beginning if that is their intent. That way, you can decide if you want to group with such people, or so that you can do the same. Make a mental note of those who lie about it. Not sure what this game's community view is on the practice.

It's for when you're in a group with other people and there's an item drop.
Need - Rolls a higher chance of getting the item
Greed - Higher chance of getting the item than "Pass," but lower chance of getting the item than "Need" since you're basically saying that you want the item but you don't need it.
Pass - You forfeit/pass on getting the item.
I'm not sure if I like or dislike this system. There are players who I've been in groups with who will always choose "Need" even if they do not actually need it and then there are other players who will ask the entire group if it's okay to click on "Need" and they'll only choose need if everyone else agrees.

Ah, thanks
People have been greedy and clicking all the needs.

It should be ok if that point is discussed in the group. If all choose "Need", chances are equal. Same goes if all choose "Greed".
Better to ask before the run starts.

Ah, thanks
People have been greedy and clicking all the needs.
Just as a note, that is not a positive indicator for a game's community

most the time and all groups I run in.....
you press NEED if its an equip (armor, boots, legs, gloves) that you are going to equip
you press GREED on all gems and mats (unless you ask the group before hand)
if I see someone press need on gems/mats without saying anything i'll usualy tell them first and if they either say they are going to keep doing it (wich many have) or they don't reply then do it again they get kicked from party and put on list of people not to run with.
no longer playing so feel free to ignore more (if i even post) just do still follow forums so MAY comment from time to time.

Well said. This system dates way back, and was used throughout the beta. Additional points. Items are for people in the group and everyone can make use of any item in some way. Alternatives are fine if discussed with the group first. For example, if you need a BoE item for an alt, that is considered greed. if no one in the group needs the item, you can ask for permission to need. Offer cash to the group so they don't lose out, especially if you've done this before. Also, gems and relics are greed items, not need.
Need - Rolls a higher chance of getting the item
Greed - Higher chance of getting the item than "Pass," but lower chance of getting the item than "Need" since you're basically saying that you want the item but you don't need it.
Pass - You forfeit/pass on getting the item.
Correction. Need is more then just a better chance. It always trumps greed. If only one person says need, they will always get the item. If several people say need, the roll is among them. If no one says need, then all those who said greed roll. And if no one says need or greed, all roll.
you press NEED if its an equip (armor, boots, legs, gloves) that you are going to equip
It's ok to need an item that is a level above you, but you will equip ASAP.

the greed on all gems doesnt make any sense to me, and the best explanation i've ever gotten was "thats how we did it in beta"
if i have a staff with a socket..and a spell power gem drops, i'm going to be using it as a mage
the templar in the group has no use for it

i still don't understand why people struggle to understand this concept...i always thought it was rather self-explanatory.
this isn't a new game mechanic implemented for Eldevin...its been a core mechanic of looting on MMO's for a very long time...
now i understand some new players that are coming to the MMO/RPG and it may be the first time using this system...but it still comes down to you have a basic understanding of what the word greed and need means...
and i mean even if you don't understand the system...i don't imagine it would take very long to work it out after pressing need/greed a couple times.
(unrelated) to all you ninja-looters... I'll be compiling a blacklist of your names and posting it on the forum in due time to warn others not to group with you.

As useful as that sounds it's probably against HCS terms of service, and if not they probably don't want naming and shaming on their live forums.

There must be something wrong then since in one of the groups I was in, someone picked "need," another picked "greed" and the "greed" won (by a few points). :/

Well id like to see a response from HCS about what they think or maybe they can come out with some other method to help deter the ninja looters

Fairly sure something is mixed up. On several boondock and guardhouse runs with others. I have clicked pass and ended up with the item.

If everyone passes I'm pretty sure that it rolls anyway, much like if everyone greeds.

Yes as Neon said if everyone passes you all roll a "pass roll"
