Chao laughed out loud. They got another one! Already! These villagers certainly were cunning, and this game had been fun. But he couldn't wait to get back to the shimmering forest. Back to work. This vacation had been exciting and provided him with a lot of fun.

No wine for him tonight. He had grabbed a nice red apple and bit into it with a crunch, his teeth sinking into the crisp skin. He had been up far too late the last night dancing with the local wenches and it was time for beddie bye. His nighttime adventures could wait one night. In fact, he might just go and get his job done tonight really quick before he hit the sack. But then it was a nice long sleep.

Dark was just about to drink his tea when Balord arrived.

"Hey Dark! You home? Are you awake?" ::pound:pound:: "Come on man, Ayla has been murdered by them vamps!" ::Pound:pound::

Dark jumped, spilling his tea over his legs but he barely felt it. He ran to the door, unlocked it and swung it open.

"WHAT?!? T-THEY GOT HER??"

"Yes, they have."

".........."

Dark was speachless for a moment.

"I..... I need to see it for myself...."

But before Balord lead him off Dark picked up his shovel. Although it was hard to believe there was no reason for Balord to lie. Once more Dark was to carry out the grim task of burying another of the vampire's victims.

"Roxatha is dust, another success for the villagers, another loss for the vampires."

Kayla had taken to writing a diary over the last few nights, for she had found it increasingly difficult to settle to sleep. She placed the quill upon the table and walked around it to watch the final rays descend upon the horizon.

Lights were still on at the inn, but she had not be asked to drink with them, seldom did anyone talk to her, especially since Ayla's demise the previous night. She felt utterly alone.

Truffle sits in her home, awaiting the morning to come once again. The days have gone by so slow yet so fast.

Ayla, gone, killed by the hands of the vampires, Roxie, one in which took part in her death, now ashes blowing in the wind.

Would this nightmare every be over, she wondered to herself.

Sipping a cup of tea to help settle her nerves and hopefully allow sleep to come, she thought about a lot of things lately, was suspicious of a few of the villagers due to their reactions to all the deaths, but who was a vampire and how many were left..... this is what she fell asleep thinking about.

As Balord waited for Dark to open the door he heard what he thought could be a chair briskly pushed as if Dark was getting up from a table. In a few seconds the door flung wide and Dark stood the tea still steaming dripping down his trousers.

"WHAT?!? T-THEY GOT HER??"

"Yes, they have." replied Balord, looking as if he had also been drained by the vamps, a cold look of vengence on his face.

".........."

Dark was speachless for a moment.

"I..... I need to see it for myself...."

"I'll grab your other shovel on the way back, I'm going to tell the others, I am sure some would like to attend us this time. I'll meet you at Ayla's house. Hey, by the way, sorry to interupt your tea like this, but you were the first one I thought of."

That said, Balord hurried off toward the inn, not even being able to remember who all was still among the living. Oh well, he would tell whoever he saw there and head back to Ayla's house.

Jimmy rolled over to the side of his bed and sat up. It was still night outside but he couldn't sleep. He stood and moved quietly across the floor to the window. He looked out onto the dark street, his breath fogging the window. He reached up and wiped his hand across it, clearing a space for him to look through.
Jimmy saw someone walk by beneath him. He took a small step back, not wanting to be seen by whoever it was. His eyes glowed green as he concentrated on them, wanting to know what they were and what reason they had to be out at night.
He took another step back as the knowledge came to him.
Oh my god he thought, That's the last of them, and I know who it is!
He moved quickly, picking up a pen and paper, wanting this written down in case he didn't make it through the night. Everybody had to know the truth.

After alerting the few people at the inn of Ayla's demise Balord heads back over to Ayla's house to prepare for her burial. As he arives he sees Dark standing over her with a forsaken look on his face.

"Hey, buck up dude! This might be your last job for a while!"

Balord returns to the bed room hoping to find some clean fresh linen to wrap the body of his new frind in. He finds two fresh white sheets and returns to the kitchen and carefully begins to wrap Ayla in the linen. As he did this he noticed something odd, there was a trace of some scent that he couldn't quite identify but that he knew he had smelled before...something like pefume, but who's? Certainly it wasn't anything he ever noticed Ayla wearing. Then it hit him he knew where that scent was from!

"Hey Dark? I think we have our last vimpire! I can't be sure but I have a plan to make sure!"

By this time some of the other villagers were showing up as Dark and Balord prepared to lay poor Ayla to rest for the long nap.

The last two days seemed a blur to Tori. After Kareena's lynching, Tori had retreated to her cottage, unable to face the other villagers. Even after the discovery of Nuke's drained form, she had remained hidden away. The rest of the village was fast to move on Aero, the supposed prince, who'd truly been a dark prince, indeed. Then Ayla...

Tori curled herself into a ball on her meager cot. Ayla, who had wanted Tori to trust her so much that she'd invited her to stay in her home without knowing who or what she was... Roxatha had been discovered almost as quickly as Aero, & had crumbled to dust upon her death as well.

And yet, no one's memory had been restored. No one knew just how many vampires there were, or how many more mornings would find victims drained of life.

Tori raised her head & glanced out the window into the darkening street. Figures were moving towards the makeshift graveyard, carrying what she could only guess was Ayla's body wrapped in linens. A sudden anger ran through Tori's veins, & she practically jumped off her cot, & snatching up her cloak she ran out her front door.

I have my suspicions, she thought, wrapping her cloak around her to guard against the wind, & surely Ayla did, too. If I can find that book of hers, maybe it'll confirm them, & we can be rid of these blasted vampires once & for all! She paused for a second, glancing over her shoulder towards the small procession bearing Ayla's body.

"I'm sorry I didn't trust you," Tori whispered. With that, she quickened her pace, heading straight to Ayla's house.

(OOC Edited to correct an error in my story line)

As the small procession headed out Balord chanced to notice a woman, was it Tori? He couldn't be sure in the fading light. He trudged on carrying his burden knowing that at least her friends were seeing her off properly!

They reached the graveyard and Dark and Balord began shoveling out a grave. Those who came along prayed and/or spoke to Ayla as the hope became deeper and deeper. Dark dug like a man possessed, but Balord matched him shovel for shovel and soon the hole was deep enough. Dark hopped out with a practiced ease and extended a strong hand to help Balord up from the grave. Someone had brought some simple wildflowers and tucked them into the linen.

As Dark and Balord as well as those who cared to lend a hand lowered her gently in the grave, Balord thought he heard her voice saying "Thank you true friends, with your help my journey is easier." Balord reached inside his shirt and pulled out a small medallion and carefully laid it across Ayla's chest and placed a single gold coin on her forehead. "To pay the boatman." He said and the small group began filling the grave with the cold dark earth.

When they finished Balord turned to the people and said, "Thank you all for coming. We owe Ayla a huge debt...we may none of us be here now if not for her diligent watch. Now I for one intend to find the one who did this and foul deed and repay them in kind. Now if you will please excuse me, I'm off to the inn to try to bring this senseless dieing to an end.

On his way to the inn, he remembers the bell which had rang on the event of that first death...how many days ago?...He goes there and begins ringing it.

As all the people cometoward the square where Balord rings the bell, he doesn't see the one he was hoping would arrive. It looked like everyone was there so he said "I didn't mean to bother any of you, but I thought this the best way to get everyone together. I would like us all to go to the inn for what I hope is one last night of our fear. I think I know who the vampire is, but we must all come together once more so I can be sure.

The noose was beckoning, the walls were closing in around her. She'd had enough of this existance, time to end it, on her terms!

Hung, that's how she'd ended up here, ironic wasn't it. Accused of being a witch and likely when morning came, to be accused of being a vampire. One was true the other was not. But the first executioner knew his job well and earning a little more money as a 'butcher' was just a sideline. So as she was in a slumber so close to death that only one dealing in death would realise, the vampire came.... and chose to keep her by his side...

She'd killed him for it, gaining his power and the curses that came with it. Then had gathered other vampires to her side, hating the feeling of loneliness...

Now they were all gone, only she remained. In 300 years, little, it seemed, had changed, no matter how she fooled herself.

She had suspected the woman known as Truffle kept sharp blades in her boots. She also knew the woman was in love, more deeply that the love that oft bind two people. Only by enraging her did she believe it would end. Thus she went for the man Truffle loved, WolfJack.

It had worked, she sighed as Death came for the soul trapped in a body that should have been dust centuries ago. She died with a smile upon her blood red lips as a fire consumed the bodies of WolfJack and Truffle and the falling ashes that her body crumbled slowly too.

The noose remained thirsty... for now.

Ayla watched as her body was carried from her home to the burial site. She noticed the small gathering and was touched. If spirits could cry, there'd have been tears coming from her eyes.

As Tori sped by on her way to Ayla's house, she caught her eye.
I'll always be here, watching over you the best that I can. Ayla dashed off behind Tori knowing she'd be looking for something within the house. When Tori came upon her desk, Ayla caused a slight breeze to knock one of the letters out of place. Tori's letter.

Dearest Tori,

My death was planned from the day we lynched Maxie. Do not blame yourself in one bit. My trust in you was wholehearted. I knew that if you wanted me dead, I'd have already been so. At this time, there are still three vampires loose. Talk to JimmyMac. He is our seer. He will help you to find the rest of the vamps. I'd suggest that prince guy first, if I were you.

Know always that I am here with you guys, untiil the vey last vamp has eaten her own dust. I can not leave until that is done. Help me to go peacefully into my rest by uncovering the last of the vamps.

Look carefully at the one that calls herself my friend. It would seem our friends have fangs these days!

Also, talk to Mamori. He can help you by speaking with those of us that have already died. He can provide guidance in your search.

Lastly, tell my friends that I love them.

Good luck in your search.

Ayla

Ayla placed her hand upon Tori's shoulder. Tori looked up from her reading for a moment as though she knew Ayla was still there. As quick as she arrived though, she disappeared.

Ayla went to Mamori next.
The last is Kayla, she whispered. She saw the look of recognition in Mamori's worn eyes, and headed out to find Kayla.

She hadn't been hard to find. Her moves were just as predictable today as they were on the very first day they met. Ayla looked at the pitiful creature and almost wanted to cry for her also. Alone, friendless, and with no hope isn't the way for a creature to live. She soon snapped to her senses and realized, this was no creature. It was a cold and calculating predator of her kind.

She followed Kayla when she went to WolfJack. Ayla knew what was coming. Ayla covered his body with her own, knowing that she couldn't protect him but hoping he'd be in a bit less fear and pain. She felt Truffle's anguish as her lover died, andher rage.
Kill her! Kill her now! Ayla shouted with all her might. For a brief second, it looked as though the wild predator was looking Ayla straight in the eyes. Suddenly, Truffle lunged forward and stabbed Kayla. Kayla's dying moments did nothing to quiet the grief within Truffle.

The first rays of light broke through the clouds. It was an awesome sight that only the villagers could appreciate. Within the cottage, Ayla could hear a gasp as one person noticed the sun coming through. It hit upon Kayla and for a moment, there was peace in her eyes. Kayla's time had come, and for once in all her life, she appeared to be happy as she burst into flames.

The fire was quickly spreading. Soon, it had touched the curtains and blocked the exits. Ayla knew that even if Truffle wanted out, there was no way she could make it out alive. So in her arms she held Truffle as she held her love. Ayla softly sung to Truffle and tried to bring her as much peace as she could in Truffle's dying moments. And as the moment of death came, the three rose together.

Out of the small cottage they came. They looked upon their fellow villagers and could take great peace knowing they were safe.

WolfJack was the first to notice that all of the villagers were there, either in spirit or in body. There was GrimGrot as he stood by Balord, and Cynyth as well. Kareena was there by Tori. Ayla saw her friend Nuke and ran to hug him, happy to be reunited.

They all said good bye one last time to their living friends. Then, slowly, they walked off into the rays of the rising sun.

The noose had finally had it's fill of vampire dust.

As the flames consumed the wood of the house, and began to creep toward Truffle's flesh, WolfJack's spirit reached out and freed her of the mortal coil. He took her hand in his, as he had so often done in the times they were alone, and led her down the path before them.

As the sunlight lit the village, freeing the living from the haze in their minds, WolfJack saw the souls of those humans how had gone before Truffle and himself still milling around.

He smiled at Truffle and walked over to them; Ayla, Cynyth, Grimgrot, Kareena, and Nukleardog. He pointed out to them the bright path and the portal at the end, urging each to follow and finally find rest.

Our job is done. Our lives are given. Let us find our reward....

Truffle awakes in the morning and grabs something to eat before she heads off to the inn. She hurriedly drinks the cup of coffee, grabs her cloak and goes out the door.

She was hoping to sneak over to WolfJack's home before anyone else woke up hoping none of them would catch her running into the arms of the lover that she tried so hard to hide from everyone.

Small towns had a habit of gossiping and with most of them feeling WolfJack was a vampire [although her heart knew better], she didn't want to give them any other reason to gossip about.

She opened the door and quickly closed it as she entered only to turn around and see WolfJack laying on the floor in a puddle of blood. Truffle let out a scream and as she did, the vampire turned around to look at her revealing who she was.

KAYLA!!!, she screamed, brushing past her and throwing herself onto the floor next to her lover. Tears pouring from her eyes and not even giving a second thought to the fact that Kayla was a vampire, she tried to find any way at all to keep him from dying, but as she held his limp body in her arms, stroking his hair, she knew in her heart that he was already gone.

What have you done Kayla, WHY!!!!, she yelled still bewildered to the fact that she was a vampire. The rage in Truffle was so great, she saw beyond the vampiric face of Kayla, saw red, saw her lover dead in her arms, she only saw one thing.................................

Truffle's rage was so great that without a blink of an eye, she reached down into her boot where she always kept a long dagger and quickly pulled it out and threw it with precision right at Kayla's heart.

Kayla let out a scream and Truffle heard the front door fly open. She glanced up at some of the villagers glaring in. Many thoughts ran through her mind, how she had wanted to share the joy with everyone that she had found the one true person who gave her happiness, how she had longed to tell them so they too could share in her joy, how both her and WolfJack would make it through this dark cloud and be able to spend the rest of their lives together with only love in their hearts, fears all washed away. She was no longer going to be able to do this.

The sun began to peak out of the great sky as the dark cloud receeded from the village, she did not care. She cried and buried her head in WolfJacks chest, broken hearted.

The beautiful rays hit Kayla and she screamed as she was burned to a pile of ash. Truffle only heard muffled screams, nothing could come past her grief.

The house began to burst into flames, curtains, furniture the wooden tables. Truffle heard screams and shouts from the villagers but did not make out any word said, all she knew was she was staying here.

I'm sorry I could not save you, she whispered to WolfJack hoping he would hear her. I'm soo sorry, and with that, the house came burning down on top of her.

As Truffle gazed around, she felt someone take her hand. She looked up to see it was WolfJack, but how... then she realized what had happened. She smiled and gave him a hug.

Truffle turned towards the village, seeing WolfJack's home up in flames but the sky had turned the sapphire blue she had remembered so long ago. The villagers, that remained, were standing in awe as the home burned to the ground.

She turned with WolfJack to leave only to see Ayla, standing before her, smiling and she ran to hug her, joy filled her heart again to know her friend was once again where she could see her. Kareena! grimgrot! she said, happy to see them as well. Cynyth stood behind Kareena and she hugged each one of them. She glanced over to where Nukleardog stood by Ayla and jokingly stated, 'Thanks for granting me the Mayor spot' and hugged him as well.

Truffle turned back to WolfJack and placed her hand in his once again, looking at him, she asked, are you ready to go 'home'?

(OOC I know this is a bit late but I didn't have an ending till now!)

As Balord stands there looking he notices that Kayla is absent as well as WolfJack and maybe some others. In sudden realization he calls out for everyone to follow him to WolfJack's home.

As he nears the house he realizes there may still be time to stop the vampires and quickens his pace. as everyone gathers outside the home they all seam nervous as to what they might find inside, after all it is not quite daylight yet and the vampires still retain power. Suddenly they decide that they must know what is going on. Unable to see exactly who kicks the door in, Balord no longer hesitates but follows the others in to find WolfJack dead on the floor. Truffle is there holding the poor man's head while Kayla stands over them, blood from WolfJack's throat dripping down her face. Suddenly Truffle jumps up with screaming, wielding a dagger from out of nowhere. Lunging forward she plunges the dagger deep into Kayla's heart who screams in turn, a very heart stopping sound to be sure. Balord notices that the room is getting a bit brighter and turns to the window and sees the sun is nearly risen. Turning back to the grizzly scene of Kayla still screaming, a ray of sunlight struck her and she burst into flame. Everyone suddenly retreats from the now burning house and they all go out into the street. Almost everyone, Truffle stays inside still cradling WolfJack's body as the flames consume them.

Then Balord could'nt believe his eyes! Everyone was outside now, even those who had parished before! He must be dreaming!

Balord goes over to Cynyth and takes his hand and shakes it vigorously, "I'm sorry I nominated you for the noose man. It was really nothing personal and I didn't think anyone else would vote likewise. I felt you should know that"

Next to grab his attention was Ayla, someone who had placed trust in him even though she felt something wasn't right with him...now that the terrible fog had lefted, he realized that something wasn't right with all of them, yet they all seemed to have pulled together fro the greater good and triumphed of the vampires. "Ayla! We did it! The vampires are all gone!" Not remembering at that instant that she was dead Balord grabs and hugs her, then realizes that only a while ago he was sending her on her final journey. "Excuse me...I was just happy to see you. By the way! I see you have not yet payed the boatman, if you had, you wouldn't be here now. It is good to see you though! Now that we all have our senses back, I know that I have some travelling to do. I will miss everyone here and if I'm ever back this way I will look those of the living up. And as for those crossing over, I will NOT forget you...EVER! Farewell all!"

Balord wandered off down the street towards the inn to gather his belongings and head off in search of the answeres he knew he would probably never find...yet he knew he had to search just the same.

On his way out of town Balord turns and says, "Farewell Stratos, it has been real interesting staying here."
