I don't think the item decaying idea is too bad if it's slow enough. Maybe have the item fully break when the durability reaches 0 instead of being able to fully repair it again. That way you can still keep items indefinitely if you take care of them (repair before 0), but if they're just left too long without being repaired or on inactives that get attacked they will eventually break and disappear like crystalline. You could possibly have guild members team up to take out a rival guilds gear. Epic gear could have extra lives like an SSI type of thing. Epics have 3 chances to hit 0 before fully breaking and being rubbish, maybe T5 epics are invulnerable as a bonus for fully upgrading. That could also add extra buffs like SSI but for your gear to give it a temporary extra life while the buff is up. Just an idea I had
