#898529 An Open Letter to the Fallensword team

Posted by Hoofmaster on 06 November 2014 - 21:21

Hi DeadParrot,

I appreciate the feedback, however be assured that we plan to dedicate a lot of time to the improvement of Fallen Sword. I agree that we have been busy lately with the Eldevin release on Steam, but be assured that we intend fully to allocate more resources in the very near future to making improvements to Fallen Sword.

Radneto, Zorg and myself will be taking a much more active role in the game design and community in the coming months to help improve many aspects of the game going forward. I realise these are only words, but be assured that this is going to be a very high priority for us.

Cheers,

Andrew (Hoof)

We're all apprehensive about this ground shaking change to Fallen Sword's PvP system.  I admit, I had my concerns at first, too.  However, after careful thought, this change is good for FS... We can't stop this change, but I don't think it will be that bad.  With the new classification in place, PvP will finally get the recognition it deserves, and those of us that are superstars will get our names in lights, as we should.... Nobody has to be hurt to do so, there will be no stagnant bands, exploitation will be minimized.  I know it's hard to swallow, but we will weather this and make it fabulous... I have faith

XP loss won't be the last thing they will be complain about.

I believe it will be. They won't see their levels being taken away by faceless aggressors.

Didn't the original ladder start out without the option of opting in? And that went so well that it had to be added in fairly quickly. How long after this idea gets put into play before the opt-in gets added?

There will not be an opt-in because you won't be damaging their hard fought for levels.

To make more friends. The stronger emotions about XP loss, the better friendship later.

Maybe for a few players. Most of the PvP attackers are silent. The whole idea is that this will stop the people who are using it to abuse others while PvPXP will allow those who PvP for true reasons of showing how good they are at it to do so.

Some other plan:

1. Leave XP loss and PvP alone.

2. Introduce a "GIVE UP" button - pushing this button will grant "no XP loss from PvP attacks" for 24 hours, but it will take -1% of each medal progress this player has. Regress for the medals.

3. A ladder - top rated GiveUp'ers

The problem is solved.

Nope. That solves nothing and is just a method to belittle those who don't want to PvP. The method we are advocating has a lot of Levelers say they'd like to try PvP under the proposed system.

This is interesting. Shorter version: So fun to cause pain to others. I especially like the fight analogy although I don't know too many great quality fighters taking enjoyment of beating up on weaklings who want no part of fighting. Interesting...

Pretty much. Some PvP attacks are for gold. It's not so much a fight as a mugging. If they actually want to fight and show how good they are at PvP, the new PvPXP system would show that much better.

IF it changes, it will be to protect people with big mouths from getting punched in them, and then using that same big mouth to pester and cry to the developers.

That's enough of that. We are reacting to FEEDBACK from customers. Feedback that's been building for a long time. They are not whining. They are pointing out that a function in the game is detracting from their enjoyment and as I've stated, none of the reasons given for keeping that function have convinced us it is needed. Everything players want from proper PvP will be catered to by the PvPXP idea. You simply won't be able to abuse it and ruin other players fun.

Nope not gonna say it BG said i have to be nice to you.

Grim said be civil.

#890880 'BLOOD' a possible idea for Grims intended removal of xp loss from pvp.

Isn't this so very close to the thread I started ? Check my thread that Grim locked

Edit: Why did you lock my thread BG ?

wow..did this explode...and from what i see in this thread.. is that many players are threatning quitting the game because they will not be able to take xp from players..meaning that is the only reason they are playing fs, it to take xp form someone and hurt their game.....if that is the only reason you are playing fs ...that is pretty sickening..there is so much more to the game..and so much more even to pvping...why is this one thing- xp loss an absolute must..or you cant play the game..mind-bogggling..

Exactly, that was kind of the idea behind it.

In truth if someone was to want to 'farm' a non participant for pvpxp they could.

They wouldn't be very competitive while doing it though, which hopefully would mean it wouldn't happen.

No no, not at all!

Pvpxp as described in my suggestion is a means to 'levelup' ones pvp. IE pvplevels complete with a pvp level indicator in ones profile, pvp level requirements on new buffs etc etc?

Theoretically, the better the pvp'er you are and the more pvp you do, the higher your pvp level would become.

Hence the 'incentives' I added to my proposal near the end part of my initial post.

In my idea regular xp and pvpxp are COMPLETELY divorced.

I don't see the problem? You can engage other players in battle. What is being discussed is the XP loss issue, not the fact PvP exists. :)

No No.  It was more directed towards avvarkum (?)  and to support dooms comment after it.  :)

#890793 'BLOOD' a possible idea for Grims intended removal of xp loss from pvp.

So here's my thought on the current update to the pvp system:

Add in a new PVPXP system called BLOOD in game, that functions similar to the current regular xp system.

BLOOD will be gained and lost via regular pvp attacks.
Your pvp level will go up in a similar fashion to your regular level, unlocking certain things as you get higher and higher.
This will also allow for some new top rated sections, best pvp player, best monthly pvp player etc etc.

  • Losses and gains would obviously raise and lower your bloodlevel depending on the outcomes.
  • They would also count on the BB which would no longer deal with regular xp, only BLOOD.

My idea on how BLOOD would work would be something along these lines:

  • Ranges would match the current pvp ladder ranges.

  • Everyone would begin at zero BLOOD, you would need to be active (or extremely good at defense) in order to advance your pvp level.

  • When attacking someone with 0 BLOOD, you would gain BLOOD at an extremely reduced rate. (To be decided)

  • When attacking a player with the same or higher bloodlevel you get 100% of standard BLOOD.

  •  When Attacking people with a lower bloodlevel you get (Their bloodlevel / Your bloodlevel) * 100%.

  • Amounts of BLOOD would build in a 'current' counter each month.

  • The end of the months BLOOD total would directly affect how many tokens you will receive.

  • Their will be a 'lifetime' BLOOD counter that will be used to determine your rankings on various 'top rated' lists.

Successful combat by attacker:

  • 10 Stamina = 10 BLOOD to attacker
  • 100 Stamina = 100 BLOOD to attacker

Defender loses:

  • 10 stamina = 1 BLOOD lost from defender
  • 100 stamina = 10 BLOOD lost from defender

Successful defence from attack:

  • 10 stamina = 5 BLOOD  lost from attacker
  • 100 stamina = 50 BLOOD lost from attacker

Defender wins: (2x BLOOD gained for successful defence)

  • 10 Stamina = 20 BLOOD to defender
  • 100 Stamina = 200 BLOOD to defender

Bounty Board

Defender Only Loses BLOOD at the same rate as losing a normal PVP attack.

(can not gain BLOOD for successful defence)

Attacker has same BLOOD gains and losses as above.

Win = 100% BLOOD
Loss = 50% lost BLOOD

  • Remove normal xp loss altogether from pvp and replace it instead with losses and gains of BLOOD.
  • Hitting anyone for gold would remain unaffected.

With the damaging and hostility inspiring element of regular xp removed it will open up the way for a lot of pvp inclusion into the main game and events:

  • Have a new tree of buffs (Or possibly rework the current trees) to allow for a fourth section of skills that can only be gained with certain pvp levels.

  • Introduce new medals that mirror the regular level side. Best player overall for BLOOD becomes dominance. With BLOOD alternatives to top 100 and monthly top 10 also.

  • Introduce new quests that require pvp interaction to increase pvp level to possibly gain access to new hunting realms. (with possibly faster hunting alternatives, higher monster xp values etc)

  • Introduce some new LE events (or modify some current ones) so that certain realms also require specific pvp levels to enter.

  • New global events that require the FS population to kill itself certain amounts of time via pvp.

Another point recently brought up by badpenny was the reintroduction of the, "Of which the rest was scattered upon the ground" message at the bottom of a combat page on a gold hit.

As things currently stand pvp is too damaging to a levellers standpoint. However if we alter that damaging aspect to be within the realms of pvp itself IE; remove regular xp loss and replace it with blood loss. (their pvp level) Then it will more than likely garner much less hostility from the wider community, possibly inspiring more interest. Which itself should allow for the creation of some more widespread pvp orientated events and activities.

Thank you to leos3000 who came up with the xp formula, and for everyone else who have contributed ideas.
