you don't. even if you think you have all your bases covered, the cows have a certain percentage built in that you can fail and your opponent can succeed. It's small but pesky. All you can do is your best and hope it works out.

yep. Best you can do is make sure your attack is greater than their defense, and your damage is greater than their armor+health. Doing this will give you the best odds. Then there are the various buffs, but thats a whole different ball game. I suggest reading through the skill trees to understand what each buff does.

Your attack bigger than enemy def
Your damage bigger than enemy armor + hp
your def bigger than enemy attack
your armor + hp bigger than enemy damage
Also helps if you got both armor and def stats, can convert extra damage or attack into extra def in case one of them fails due to game chance (nightmare visage, barricade).
Also should look at Enhancements, if anything on the enemy needs to get lowered or some of your stats raised if some Enhancement has a high chance to trigger.

Empower and Reckoning are also your friends. And Last Ditch in case of a First Strike miss.
And never go anywhere without your Force Shield, you don't know where that guys been.

I would also highlight that a Summon Shield Imp (from Buff market or via potion) should give extra protection for avoiding being killed by a moob. ( as already told there are rare negative events). [also remember that a SE creature could crush a SSI in a single turn]
cheers
