Chapter II The Mines

Well, it’s time to leave everything behind, and go. As I looked back to my school, I thought, “ Sigma II will be a desolate place, do I really want to leave all this behind? Well, nothing on Sigma II will be as scary as a dinner conversation at my house.”
I thought about a movie I watched about a guy who took a butter knife and ripped people apart with it. I imagined my stomach being ripped open and my intestines falling out.
“Well, maybe it is scarier than dinner, but nothing can compete with breakfast.”
I stepped into the dropship, and the door slid shut. It was a pleasant ride we hit hyperspace 2 hours into the trip. In 4 days we were there. I suited up in something called the Purist Outsuit. I was told it was the latest in technology from SigmaTek. It allows a ComLink signal to go within a 3-planet range. I also got a katana, 2 mounted-knuckle claws, (like the ones you see on wolverine from X-Men) a scan visor, and a short stock of throwing knives. So, on I go. My ComLink received 2 messages, 1 telling me I should probably go to the mouth of the highridge mines. The other telling me they’ve just received a distress signal. I checked my scan visor and I immediately picked up the signal. It sounded like this: C-n –yon-e hear m-? This –s So-die- -e-li. Cle-ra—e c--- 47-326-36264329-66393-51-89---21-1. I’m b—ng –tta-c-ed. Plus I fou-d the --- ---- ----.

……..Transmission lost. Preparing to receive…………….Reception failed.
Transmission End.
I decided to go check it out.
When I reached the mouth to the mines, I realized it was pitch black. I stepped back and thought “Well, there’s nothing to do here. I might as well go in.” About 13 yards into the mines, I picked up the signal again. But instead of listening to it, I traced it. I traced it all the way to a soldier. I called out to him, and immediately he turned around and shot at me! I cried out, “Wait! I’m friendly!” He walked towards me and helped me up. “Sorry.” He said, “You can never be to careful.” He had a raspy Italian voice and a scar on the side of his face. I could sense skepticism in his heart. “I’m Temli. Could I ask a favor?”
“Sure.” I said. “Well, I need a rare metal called highridge ore, this sells for quite a price.
And I need the money for an operation. Just go down there and through that opening and you should find it somewhere in there.” Then something told me I should step aside. So I did and a glowing beetle ran past. I drew my katana and sliced it in half. But it was still alive! It clawed at my arm. It missed. Then it fell down silent. Dead. Temli gave me a ‘well what did you expect’ look. So I walked to the opening. Suddenly! A flash of light and an explosion! The shockwave blew me backwards, and I hit a stone wall. Then, blackout.
