In an effort to make irc a little -easier- to use for folks who are new to it I'm going to basically rewrite the initial guide, and add new pictures.

Please note, Fallensword IRC is player owned and operated and any issues with it should be directed to support@fallenswordirc.com or join #help on the server.
--------------------------------------------------

For those familiar with irc:

server: irc.fallenswordirc.com port 6667
room: #fallensword

--------------------------------------------------------

For those who are new to irc the rest of this post is here to try to help you. If you are still experiencing difficulties feel free to contact myself or any of the irc staff.
--------------------------------------------------------
BROWSER BASED ACCESS TO IRC

This is provided as a courtesy. If you have issues with it, consider downloading a Program/client. Use of a program for irc is strongly encouraged.

Option 1: Connect directly via the fsirc website. We are located at http://www.fallenswordirc.com/chat

The page should look like this (without the red mark up in the image)
http://i39.tinypic.com/2ennebs.png

Follow the instructions on the picture:

* Replace "nubcake" with your fallensword name.

* Leave the second space empty.

* Click the Start Chatting button.

You should go directly to the room by doing this.

IF you do not go directly to chat but instead get a popup about a 'security warning' you will probably see something like the next image. Again, your screen won't have the red mark up on it.

http://i43.tinypic.com/kd34p3.png

Click no, you do not want to block the java on the site.

Again, this should allow you directly to chat.

Option 2: Mibbit

Disclaimer: For some time we did not allow mibbit to access the fsirc because it was abused, mibbit is available for the time being but this may change in the future. Because of how mibbit behaves if one user gets in trouble and fsirc has to ban the person from our server while using it, it may influence anyone else who is also using mibbit. This means that while it is available, we do not strongly endorse it for regular use.

How to use Mibbit --> click this link: http://tinyurl.com/fsirc-mibbit or if you prefer http://preview.tinyu...om/fsirc-mibbit

What you will see:

http://i43.tinypic.com/2nbd5bb.png

Do what the red text on the image says. You're in fsirc chat with just the click of a button.

-------------------------------
GETTING AND USING AN IRC CLIENT/PROGRAM
-------------------------------

There are tons of programs out there that will let you join an irc chat. In the interest of simplicity I will only list and link to a few.

Chatzilla: Perfect for the firefox user. You can get this browser add-on at https://addons.mozil...ddon/chatzilla/

Once you have the add-on installed all you have to do is Click this link( irc://irc.fallenswordirc.com/fallensword)to launch chatzilla and be instantly placed into the fsirc chat. Once in the room please type /nick YOURNAME to change your default name to your character name. Obviously where it says YOURNAME you put -your- name.

http://i43.tinypic.com/1dy9ed.png

HydraIRC: Get it from http://www.hydrairc.com/
This is the client that Hoofmaster himself uses. There is a lot more going on right from the start with this client so I don't suggest it to the beginner user. However, you could easily work up to this and find yourself utilizing all it has to offer.

Once installed it should launch and connect with just a simple click of a link. irc://irc.fallenswordirc.com/fallensword Just like with chatzilla you will need to type /nick yourname (substituting your actual character name for the word yourname) and click enter to change your screen name from the default or user name on your computer.

IceChat: Get it from http://www.icechat.net/site/ With less in your face bells and whistles this is a good client for a newer user. You still have the versatility there to find though.

Once installed it should launch and connect with just a simple click of a link. irc://irc.fallenswordirc.com/fallensword Just like with chatzilla you will need to type /nick yourname (substituting your actual character name for the word yourname) and click enter to change your screen name from the default or user name on your computer.

mIRC: You can get it at http://www.mirc.com/ I no longer suggest this for the casual user due to the 20 dollar fee after trial. There are ways around it, but for ease of use for the casual irc chatter I do not see the point being that there are other completely free options available that are just as good now. If you asked me 3-5 years ago I would have said mIRC all the way. A lot has changed though.

Once installed it should launch and connect with just a simple click of a link. irc://irc.fallenswordirc.com/fallensword You will need to type /nick yourname (substituting your actual character name for the word yourname) and click enter to change your screen name from the default or user name on your computer.

Some all in one chat programs like Trillianhttp://www.trillian.im/ or Pidgin http://www.pidgin.im/ are compatible with IRC. To connect using one of these just use the information at the first part of this post and follow the steps within your program to add an irc server and room to your connections.

Clients for Mac Users

Xchat Aqua http://sourceforge.n...ects/xchataqua/

Clients for nix/BSD/Linux Users

Irssi http://www.irssi.org/

xChat http://xchat.org/ -also works on windows.

For iPods
You will first need an IRC client.

ICR999 is a free app. It's simple to set up and use.
Send and recieve messages as instant as on a desktop and does not disconnect if you do, for example, a quick google search.

Add New Server
Title: Fallensword
Hostname(server): irc.fallenswordirc.com
Port: 6667
Password: leave blank
Nickname: Your character name
Username: Whatever you wish
Realname: Your name (No one can/will see, so you don't have to)
Char Set: UTF-8

Click Channel List (upper left)

Add New Channel
#Fallensword

Now, head back to Channel List, click Done then connect to FallenswordIRC!

(Thank you Spaz2 for the Ipod guide!)

I hope this helps those who have been having trouble with getting into chat.

Thank you for the Chatzilla info. I had only used mIRC before, but I don't have $20 to be spending on a chat program. It's good to know there's still free versions out there. :)

shdowdrgn,

I really wish I could help you figure out what is going on when you try to join the chat.

Have you tried anything besides the in game client we provide? Most major issues are solved by using a program like chatzilla or icechat or hydra.

If you are using the client on our website, is your java up to date?
Did you click no (the right answer) or yes, when the security warning pops up? If you have clicked yes in the past you will need to go in and unblock it to try again via the browser.

The programs are not an option for me atm (personal) besides that i have never seen the pop up you are talking about. my most common scene when going to the IRC is a black screen. java is up to date and to be sure i tried to update it the last time i tried it. i have tried this with fire fox and with chrome to no avail:/

Mibbit is also browser based. Could you give that a shot for me?

I know of another site that has a browser based access for their server, but it will require a few extra steps to get you to ours. I checked and it is possible to switch to ours from theirs though. If mibbit doesn't turn the trick for you we could try that. You'd have a few security popup things, like the 'java wants to run' thing and so forth which will pop up but the site is safe, I've used it pretty regularly myself.

Are you allowed to add things on firefox or chrome?

Are you at college by chance? Or only able to connect from work or perhaps a library? Or somewhere there is a network or server admin who might have some stuff turned off for security? Those are the only things I can really think of that might be causing issues. Some colleges and some workplaces and libraries will block the port. Basically, if something on your network isn't allowing your computer to listen on port 6667 (and surrounding ones) then it won't let you connect. Essentially they're trying to block any filesharing and irc gets caught in the crossfire.

Telnet might work if you're on an older OS.

Another suggestion I've gotten from someone trying to help suss this out is that perhaps if you have a usb stick you could install xchat or firefox with chatzilla on it and go that way.

I feel bad we haven't come up with a working solution for you yet.

No worries mate, at least you gave it a chance and are trying to give it a try. I had a heck of a time back when I first started too, so I how frustrating it can be.

This thread is going on 3 years old. That IRC server has been shut down for a while.

There is a different IRC server and channel now, as posted in the Announcements section:

https://forums.hunte...hunted-cow-irc/

Be aware though, it's for all Hunted Cow games, not just Fallen Sword.

Just realized this is a Pinned thread. BigGrim, maybe unpin it since the info is old? Or perhaps lock it with my post being the last one, directing players to the new thread.
