Hey,

So Chrome plans to drop NPAPI Support in September. And other browsers seem to be discuraging use of NPAPI plugins like Java.

I'm wondering, do The Cows have any plans on what to do once this happens?

Eldevin will no longer work with Chrome after September. I have no idea if this affects Fallen Sword or not.

For now installing Comodo Dragon seems to work as a substitute but I feel as though the Big 3 (IE, FF, Chrome) will all probly drop NPAPI support eventualy. Microsoft has even talked about discontinuing support as of Windows 10's release date.

Perhaps The Cows should move to Flash or another non-NPAPI plug in.

We haven't made any immediate plans, but will explore all of our options. It won't be as simple as converting from Java to something else though, it would take monumental effort and time.

I think the future of web games will be with WebGL, and with platforms such as Unity and Unreal now supporting deployment to that format, that's the likely route we would take. That's just my personal opinion though. WebGL can produce some pretty impressive results!

Thanks Xero, glad to hear you're exploring options for those of us that play solely through browser.

Thank you for the update.

I would really hate to see Eldevin die along with Java. It's a beautiful game with an even better community.

@Mandalore

Steam is it's own program. However Eldevin is advertised as an "In-browser" game.

I believe the steam version actualy uses a java applet (correct me if i'm wrong here)

What Xero meant is that Unity can deploy builds in lots of different formats. Including WebGL, which is a possibility. With the Java support, Chrome also looks to be ditching support for the Unity Webplayer, so rest assured we wouldn't be looking in that direction. :)

Wanted to bump this post since September is fast approaching. Haven't heard anything about Cows replacing Java so wanted to see if anything has been determined since we last heard from staff. Thanks.

Sorry for the grave digging. This still is relevant.

Has any plans/decisions been made in regards to Java?

That's a good question....

Seems like java is still around and the game still runs on it I believe...so you're safe.....

Internet explorer is the only windows browser  that is not changing. We will always be able to fall back on it. Even though I cant stand IE it will be worth using just to play our game. I just went ahead a few months ago and made the transition. Im used to it now.

Nothing will happen. Eldevin's last update will be lvl 50 content. Moving from java to something else will never happen.
