The point of essence of magic is the mana regeneration, not really the damage. It's an essential talent for my prophet build, but I am not sure about it for a mage because I don't really run dungeons with people when I spec to mage, so I don't know if I have mana troubles or not. It could be one of those low tier skills that are there for prophets to pick up.

 

However, I am sure you can make use of it if you find yourself using normal ranged attacks in between skills. If you spend all your time AOE farming/grinding, then I don't think it's that useful.

This build differs from Luke's build a bit but I noticed alot of mages uses masiama when grinding. Its helpful along side with forstbite, eurpt, and dragons breath. I still would do 1vit. 1 mana and 4 sorcery per level

OK, I'm convinced.  When I finally get back to the game, I'm taking Miasma/Nightmare.  Giving up a point in Essence of Magic for that (or perhaps give up both and take another Invocation.

 

I am staying with all sorcery.  Unless things have changed with the 47 cap and ICC, survivability has not been an issue with my mage, so don't need more vitality.  And pots+Starlight should take care of all my mana needs.

Depending on how you lay out your mage, you don't need to give up essence of magic or invocation.
