Artists, I would like to welcome you to the Grand Graphics Tournament! This is our fifth edition of the event and it is my hope that it will be as awe inspiring as it is educational. We have artists of many different styles and degrees of proficiency entering. For those of you who have never been to one of these before, Welcome! The Grand Graphics Tournament (the GGT) is a large scale battle of art amongst all of the graphic artists in these forums.

Week One: For our inaugural theme I will be asking you to create a Tarot Card from the Major Arcana suit. All entries must be 280 x 503 in size. I am providing a template size image for reference. Preferably entries should be tall for orientation, as this is the standard orientation, however if necessary you may lay the card on its side.

You must include the name of the card and the Roman Numeral associated with it on your entry.

Your entry should embody the divination meaning for the card of your choice.
Please see http://en.wikipedia....ki/Major_Arcana for more information and links to the various individual cards and their meanings.

I will be accepting entries starting on the 2nd of July, entries deadline is 23:00 ST on July 9th.

What is Tarot?
Tarot a pack of playing cards (most commonly numbering 78), used from the mid-15th century in various parts of Europe to play a group of card games such as Italian tarocchini and French tarot. From the late 18th century until the present time the tarot has also found use by mystics and occultists in efforts at divination or as a map of mental and spiritual pathways.
Occultists call the trump cards and the Fool "the major arcana" while the ten pip and four court cards in each suit are called minor arcana. The cards are traced by some occult writers to ancient Egypt or the Kabbalah but there is no documented evidence of such origins or of the usage of tarot for divination before the 18th century.

The Major Arcana or trumps are a suit of twenty-two cards in the Tarot deck.
Each Major Arcanum depicts a scene, mostly featuring a person or several people, with many symbolic elements. In many decks, each has a number (usually in Roman numerals) and a name, though not all decks have both, and some have only a picture. The most common sets of names and numbers is as follows:

Number ......Name
0 ...... The Fool
1 ...... The Magician
2 ...... The High Priestess
3 ...... The Empress
4 ...... The Emperor
5 ...... The Hierophant
6 ...... The Lovers
7 ...... The Chariot
8 ...... Strength / Fortitude
9 ...... The Hermit
10 ..... Wheel of Fortune
11 ..... Justice
12 ..... The Hanged Man
13 ..... Death
14 ..... Temperance
15 ..... The Devil
16 ..... The Tower
17 ..... The Star
18 ..... The Moon
19 ..... The Sun
20 ..... Judgement
21 ..... The World

If you have difficulty in choosing a card to design please pm me and I will draw one at random for you.

BASIC RULES:

-Entries will be template size.
-No cheating
-No smack talking
-Don’t use artwork you have made before. Entries must be newly made for this competition
- Even if the piece is described as 'nude' please follow forum and game standards of decency for your submission.

I know, big wall of text huh. Does it make any sense at all? Should I try to explain this better?

I think it makes sense. We're creating a tarot card based on one of the 21 themes available?

Yes exactly, well 22 themes technically, the fool is number 0.

I'll be posting a brief meaning with each entry when it comes time to vote.

i was really confused at first but after i looked at the wiki link i think i got it my only question is what text is on it? Should we just have the number the card is or should we have the name of the card too?

Sorry but Photobucket decided to take down my Signature.

very interesting can't wait to see the outcomes...

one question though, do we need to inform you of what card we picked?
what if multiple ppl, or even everyone picks the same card?

I don't need to know in advance, odds are there will be duplicates. Some cards are just more likely to be inspiring for this than others. I wouldn't worry about duplicates however. While there are descriptions you don't have to adhere to them blindly, each design may be -very- different from another without being outside of the theme. I'll post some examples of the same card in different decks.

(I have each of these decks as well as several more.)

was thinking about it, and are we permitted to use other mediums or does the majority of the work have to be done digitally?
