This is a guide to help you get started summoning creatures, and getting the most out of them. Summons are a great way to relax from the pressures of lvling up your character and can be really fun!

Scrolls
First off, in order to have a summon, you need to be a summoner by getting to 3rd tier or higher. Some summons are class specific, others come from quests. In order to have a summon, you first need to have the scroll to read.

These are the current summons available:
Basilisk (Quest: Blood to Body)
Crystal Fiend (quest: Volos Stone)
Fairy Dragon (quest Heart of the Dragon)
Imp (Greater Demon)
Imp Swarm (10pp from Hellfire's Delight 68,66 in gothador)
Ogre (Warlord)

Rat (quest: Rat on Me)
Scout (Dark Elf Summoner)
Skeleton (Necromancer)
Skeleton Lord (10pp from Dark Past 4,4 Cells Lvl 3)
Wisp (Trancendent)

*ones in blue are class specific

Summon Skills
Now, besides needing to be a summoner, there are a couple of skills that I HIGHLY recomment you get.

1)Channel APs: channel 20aps from you to your summon with a 2ap cost. Gotten from the quest, "The Great Channel" http://www.guildofwi...ails.asp?id=135 In order to do the quest, you need 2mil gp and a golden needle which is gotten from the quest "In the Haystack." Most summon's have VERY low max aps (Basilisk's 50, Fairy Dragon's 75) and since you have to walk it everywhere, this skill helps you actually have enough aps to do something.
2)Summon Recall: the best way to get your summon back to your cult square for 50,000gp and 10aps. You need to have the 50,000gp on you when you recall, and when you do recall your summon, it will go to the square you are currently in, NOT directly to your cult square so be sure if you're taking your summon home that you recall before you recall it. The cost is 5mil at the Recall Totem, (87, 48 ) in Mount Braskin

** These skills are expensive, I know! but if you're serious about making your summon last and get stronger, I believe you'll find they are worth it.**

Getting the Best out of your Summon
Okay, so you've gotten your skills, and your summon scroll. Now, you want to read your scroll, and begin "breeding" your summon. Each summon has specific range in its stats just like any other creature. You want to figure out what the best stats are for it by summoning, sensing, then killing until you get a good idea what the range is. If you want to hunt with your summon, you want to look at ATK and hp. HP isn't as important as atk, however you don't want your summon's hp to be SO low that you're healing it all the time.

DONT be afraid to be picky!! If you plan on really working on your summon, you want to start off with them being the pick of the litter!

Picking Creatures
So, you've gotten your summon to be best it can be, but you need to find out what it can kill! I recommend going onto the BoW (http://www.guildofwisdom.co.uk) and using their creature list. (This works for your character aswell as your summon) Have the list display all the creatures from all the realms. By clicking "def" at the top, the list will sort the creatures from highest defense to lowest. You want to look at your summon's atk and pick a creature with about the same defense as your summon's atk. Remember, summon's get the base xp for killing creatures, no frenzy or rage.

These are some important things to consider when picking a creature:
1. Is there a creature pit in the realm its in? (not necessary, but saves you 10aps)
2. How far apart are the creatures?(remember your summon can't tele)
3. Does the creature give the best ap/xp ratio for your summon?
4. Are there other things in the realm to kill so you don't get bored?

Personally, since I've got a Young Basilisk right now, I like hunting in the Braskin Plains. Basilisk's can have a max of around 290+ atk however if you have between 290-260 atk, you should be okay. Ta'koths give the best xp, and there are tons of other things in the Plains for Lissy(pet names rock) to kill.

A way to save 10aps & 50k gp is to summon your creature in the realm it will start off hunting in once you know the range, and "breed" it there.

Hunting with your Summon
Now, once you've got your creature/realm picked out, its time to start hunting! But don't just send your summon off there blind. I suggest taking your main character in there with it, to locate the creature its killing, and then teleport there. This way, if the creature drops something, you're right there to pick it up, and you can heal your summon along the way.

Its okay if your summon doesn't hit the creature every time. depending on what your atk started off at, the summon probably won't hit it 100% everytime until around lvl 100 or so (can vary depending on summon). If you feel like your summon just isn't hitting at all, check the creature! You might have just gotten a particularly bad one. If thats the case, just move a bit out of the way, and locate again. Over time, your summon should be able to tackle those baddies that it wasn't able to before

Also, I recommend lowering the creature for your summon if you can. This will save you on aps. If you are lowering, be very careful that you don't hit the summon by mistake, and also be sure to take off your deathblow/overcharge rune so you don't accidently kill the prey  .

Creature Pits
Creature pits are the only place besides your cult square where you can guarantee your summon won't be killed. (Well, depending on your cultmates  ) Creature pits are like Life Nexus' for summons. They are only a safehaven and do not heal it.

Creature Pits:
Crystal Valley:Crystal Pit 1,9
Dark Forest: Berin's Pit 85,8

Frozen North:
Asseq Pit 34,95
Maloot Pit 57,98
Moset Pit 83,93
Nnelg's Pit 80,50
Zasit Pit 50,70

Gothador: Angelo's Pit 43,32
The Great Desert: Tupos Pit 150,50
Kingdom of Ulth'ran: Brok's Pit 8,32
Mount Braskin: Braskin's Pit 54,39
Spore Cave: Spore Pit 18,19
Spore Field: Spore Pit 15,72

As you can see, the Frozen North has the most creature pits. The pits look almost like sewer grates, however unless your summon is 20 squares or less (takes 10ap to recall it, 10 to take it back) from a pit, I suggest just recalling it back to your cult square. Please, DO NOT JUST LEAVE YOUR SUMMON! It would be a shame to wake up and find that your summon has been killed.

Healing
You need to remember that as you level up your summon, and that your summon can be hit by creatures just like you can. Therefore, you want to make a healing spell for your summon. Check your summon's resistances and make a healing spell for your summon based on what is has the least resistance to.
For example, Basilisk's have the least resistance to transdimensional spells, so I created a single creature transdimensional healing spell for her.

Other uses for Summons
Killing stuff isn't the only purpose of a summon. Many people use summons to be their eyes at the exchanges, (be wary when you see a strange creature in a realm it doesn't belong!) or to kill things that give drops. Also, give your new summon a cool pet name! (my basilisk's name is Lissy) Remember that the most important purpose of summons is to have fun! :) so enjoy!

If your cult square is in the ethereal void, void critters are nice to level a wisp or young basilisk whilst still being close enough to home.

well, if you look at the xp they give, the takoths are worth the trip...they give up to 50k xp for a summon while the void critters only give up to 2000

Excelent guide, Cari....I might just get bored enough one day to level me my basilisk up. I usually used mine to level him up on polar bears, but yeah, takoths are good now that you've pointed that out. BTW, if I didn't say so before....LOVE THE SIG!

This is perhaps a silly question, but I've never really played with my summoned creatures before and I can't seem to find an answer.

I summoned a wisp with my alt out in The Great Desert. Right after I did it, it seemed a silly move. I thought you could kill your old summon simply by summonning a new one in a different location, but that isn't working for me. Do I have to go and actively kill my old summon to get a new one?

Thank you for any help you can give me!

I hear that a nifty way to start a summon is to kncok down a high level creature until one summon hit will kill it (ie. Necros).

Then you can summon/swing at the thing until your 2% kicks in.

You'll get your summon a nifty head-start in life and who cares if you miss, cause you can just keep summoning them. :D

Rhaetou...yes you actually have to have the old one killed somehow before you can summon a new one.

I thought at one point I thought I could summon multiple ones in different realms...found out that didn't work.

So yeah you need to get someone to kill it for you or kill it yourself

Xade: who didn't think of doing that before....wow that should be interesting :D

Thanks Caridwen, only recently started trying summon bizz and 'wimpy' is a humongous level 3. Didnt have an idea how they were supposed to heal... now he stands a chance of surviving all the way to a level 4. Hee hee!

Nice guide! Although I have pretty much already figured this out! I like taking Barnebas (Type: Young Basilisk (75) Class: Beast
Attack: 349 Defence: 539
AC: 1073 DMG: 1073-1073
HP: 161 / 180) to the LOD1 and hunt undead demons, though I think maybe ta"koth may be his next "snack" as I can use the sourced mana pots! Some time back I found a weak Lethsan in the LOD and Barny took him out for 11 level ups...be careful though, Barny's predecessor met a rather untimely death at the hands of one!

Great guide... I was going to ask about resistances and it hadn't occurred to me they'd be the same as the standard creature type. DOH! Only think I have left to do now is give my Summon a name - and hope that Hoofy finally gets around to some new Summon skills and Summon-only quests/drops.
