I'm sorry, but honestly, what excuse is there for bad spelling in this day and age? (yes i'm aware of dyslexia, and I apologise to any genuine dyslexics out there)

We have a dozen different dictionaries or thesauruses at our fingertips, and yet we still get bombarded by a barrage of horrible spelling and even worse grammar.

I say we need a forum spell check!

PS - yes for those wondering, this is more of a joke than serious, but I really do think the standard of spelling out there is atrocious

Whilst I agree wholeheartedly about some of the appalling spelling and grammar found on these pages, I have to say that I think a spell checker would not work. Think of the differences between English spoken in The U.K. and that used in the United States, then factor in all the problems you would have from players for whom English is not their first language. Whose spell checker do you use? I certainly don't want my posts automatically translated into American English, and I'm sure American users would feel the same way.

And then there's the question of textspeak and abbreviations such as LOL an LMFAO etc... It would be far too complicated to set up.

I'm sorry but, as much as I agree with you, I don't think it could be done. :ugeek:

It's not terribly difficult. In the first place, decent browsers (read: not IE) already do on-the-fly spell checking in text entry areas. In the second place, there are freely available AJAX spell checkers that could be integrated into the forum without too much difficulty -- see http://orangoo.com/spell/ or http://www.spelljax.com for instance, or google "free ajax spell checker".

There isn't really that much variation. There's grey vs. gray, and defence vs. defense, and colour vs. color, and I can't think of any others. The biggest difference is really just slang and cultural terms. I believe that your entire post was written in 'American English'. One point where British/American English diverge is in grammar, but all the OP is asking for is a simple spell checker. Beyond dialects, in most situations all English is the same. (or, you can understand what the other person is saying when they're different)
