In a fight attack works against defence so higher attack vs lower defence gives a higher chance to successfully hit an opponent and vice versa.
Damage works against armour, so say you have 10 armour and the other guy has 14 attack, if he hits you the most HP he can remove in that hit is 4 points. If you have 10 armour and he has, say, 8 damage if he hits you the most HP he can remove in one hit is 1.

Attack goes this way:
Attackers Attack, vs. defenders Defence = Hit or no hit. Greater difference better chance to hit/avoid.
Hit -> Attackers damage - Defenders Armor = Damage done to defender.
Then defenders HP - Damage done = Defenders new HP
Example:
Lets say attackers attack is 20 and damage 30
defenders defence is 15 and armor 25 and current HP is 11
attack 20 vs. defence 15 = lets say its hit (there is random element in this one)
-> damage 30 - armor 25 = damage done 5
Defenders HP 11 - damage done 5 = defenders new HP 6
Notice how ever, that if you are figthing with equal damage vs equal armor ie. 45 vs 45, you might do/receive more damage than just 1 since there is some small random element that affects damage in attack vs defence phase. So if attacker has much greater attack than defenders defence is, defender might receive more than just one damage.
Notice also that every hit resuklts in minimum of 1 damage, no matter if its even damage 1 vs. armor 100.
