attack is for hitting the other person in the first place.
to hit them is the sort of random equation of: attack vs defense
and if you hit them, damage is from: damage vs armor
What is the stat "Attack" for?

just ignore him/her, of course it is important, if you never hit something, how are you gonna kill it?

the formula from (what i hear)
[ur attack / (ur attack + opponents defense) ]*100 for your chance to hit... the max it can be is 98% chance to hit (however as you level up monsters have higher defense so even if you put everything on attack you'll miss from time to time..) always try to have more then 50% chance (meaning ur attack should be higher then the monsters defense rating)
above formula seems to work but when you have less then 50% chance to hit you miss something awful.. when you hit 60% or so you usually have a much better hit rating.. maybe there are different formulas after all :? (been trying for a few days now... and i guess damage calculations are about the same formula.. damage/armor+damage or something.. however there is also some random chance...)

^^
the stats randomise slightly with each hit.
eg if u have 100 attack, ur enemy has 100 defence. sometimes, ur attack will count as 90-110, and his defence might vary the same.
(please note, im not sure exactly how much it varies)

i know there is some randomness.. there are also other things that effects your hit/damage ratings. fist one is not all creatures (even the same ones) have same stats also when fighting ur equipment gets damaged and u lose some of item stats (from what can i say that effects even fighting a single monster and you need to hit it more then once ) .. like i said been trying for a few days with different equipment to find out how it works.. but there simply isn't any way to formulize what i see... need to know the chance to get your equipment damaged.. need to know that randomness factor... but as far as i can say that formula gives a roundabout idea of your hit rating..

All stats are important for one reason or another, but the questions should be how much of each stat should a person have.
Attack determins your ability to hit a target. If it is too low, you miss more than you hit... If it is too high, another stat will be suffering somewhere.
Damage is how hard you hit when you do hit. If it is too low, you will only damage the armor but not the person (or creature) in the armor. If it is too high, things will die instantly... if you happen to have enough attack to hit it in the first place... The same principle applies here, if it's too high, another stat will be suffering. (be sure to read the exceptions in the end of this reply).
Defense is your ability to avoid getting hit in the first place. If it is too low, you'll always get hit (unless you have enough attack and damage to kill your opponent quickly enough) and even if you have very high armor, your equipment will get damaged and need frequent repairs. If it is too high, you'll rarely get hit, but you'll also end up not growing much because you could have (and should have) invested some of those points on offensive skills.
Armor is how much of a beating you can take before the damage gets through your armor and counts against your HP. Too low armor and you'll feel anything that hits through your defense. If Armor is too high, other stats suffer and not only will many battles likely be unresolved, but also you'll not have much gold due to cost of repairs.
HP is how much health or life you have. This stat isn't as important as any others for the simple reason that whether you have 1 HP or 100, if the damage gets through your defense and armor, you die quick... If it doesn't get through defense and armor, or if you manage to kill your oponent quick enough, you won't lose any HP at all. In my opinion, HP is a wasted stat and many high level, successfull players have lived long healthy lives and through many battles with only 1-5 base HP.
Here's the exceptions:
Once you start wearing more items (from about level 4 and higher), 90% of the items you will find or end up wearing will have more defensive stats than offensive. If you raise too much defense and armor, those 90% of items will end up causing many of your battles to be unresolved. You will not gain XP or grow, if all of your battles are unresolved.
There are some good items that help with attack and damage, but they are most often only weapons, with a few occassional exceptions. It is much better to invest a majority of your base stats on attack and damage.
As a general guideline, let's divide stats into three categories, "Offensive", "defensive" and "not worth mentioning"...
Offensive
Attack
Damage
defensive
Defense
Armor
not worth mentioning
HP
From level 1 through level 15, your total (including item bonusses) of offensive skills (attack + damage) should never be less than one half of your total defensive stats (defense + armor). Ideally, it should be higher than 75% if possible.
To determin which you need more of between attack and damage (if their added total is close to or more than 75% of defense and armor total), consider the following:
If you hit every time, but not killing fast enough or needing to hit a large number of times, then your attack is high but damage is low.
If you tend to miss too much, but cause a lot of damage or instantly kill once you do hit, then your attack is too low and damage too high.
A good balance should leave you with the fewest number of hits/misses before your target is defeated.
Once you get beyond level 15 to 20, it is not uncommon to maintain higher attack and damage total than you defense and armor total, with the reasoning being that you need to kill quick to get the most experience for the amount of stamina spent in a battle. Quite simply, if you can kill on the first hit, you won't even need armor or defense at all, you oponent will die before they ever get a chance to hit you.
While adjust stats (or spending your level-up points), keep in mind that the majority of all items in the game will provide defensive stats, with few exceptions.
Good luck!
...and spend those points very wisely.
