Still a bad idea, helping newbs isn't a job it's called being nice. And the tutorial works just fine, players quit because they play without bothering to read it and get frustrated because they read like a quarter of it.

nobody reads the tutorial, it's too long to read so they go out without thinking, have no idea what they are doing, so they crack the $h1t$ and quit, helpers could maybe give them a little help with a bit of gold and items, bit of advice and send them on their way, the helpers could earn something like a rating from a newbie once they reach level 5 on how helpful they were

The idea is good, is for players who wish to help, no body its enforcing you dude, anyway what help you could bring? if you cant even help yourself

I suggest somebody badly renews the tutorial cuz its really boring and i bet 0.0001% of the newbies take a look to that.

added a couple images about mechanical aspects:

Posted Image

Posted Image

various arrows point to
'view tutorial & ask newbie helpers if you have questions',
' view online players, view online newbie helpers'
'Newbie Helper Status [on/off] (this would add or remove a player from the newbie helpers online list - default is off when not logged in, and would have to be turned on each time you log into the game.)
Helped: (possibly a number reflecting how many players you have helped who've indicated that your aid was actually helpful.

Please bear in mind, I'm not suggesting replacing a tutorial with newbie helpers, I'm suggesting helpers as an aid to utilizing the tutorial(or hopefully an updated one) and as a means of drawing the new players into the community.

The idea of the gear is to maybe help them through the auction house, so they learn how it works.

NUUUUUUUUU! Don't tell them!!!!

and why m'dear not? If they dont know how to find/use auction house - how are they ever going to spend fsp on things people want to sell?

I do this already!! :) If I'm going to be on a while I'll go to the *who is online* page and buff the newbie players. I try to find the ones who are without a guild to help first. Not to recruit to my guild (not accepting new members right now) But mostly I try to help them because they don't have anyone to buff them or ask questions yet. :) I was completely lost the first week or so. I would have REALLY appreciated the help.

Edit to the original post for some tweaks to the idea, and to make it easier to read.

I have to agree with DevineGod there should be NO reward for helping others... you should just want to do it to be nice and helpful... ALSO there is a new player help section on the FORUM and a link to the forum in game saying if you have a question ask it there... so all you need to do is have x amount of people sent to that forum and actively refreshing it and reading questions... when I started it was flooded with people giving item drops and gold and advice... now I still see some of that but nowhere near as much and just more spam and flaming on that board... all you need is more mods to check that section and then to take everyone who wants to help and have them keep that window open...

Really I have received points for helping people out... someone even bought me a gift... but when I do help people I NEVER expected anything out of it then 1 more active player in the game...

if you read far enough, you'd notice I said that I too didn't feel there was a need for a reward, but that some might, and offered very low key suggestions.

Yeah I did... but you still mentioned it... we don't just mention things we really don't want... and tbh I would probably stop helping people if this was passed as a suggestion, due to the fact that it just shows that people don't expect others to do good just for the good of it...

yes, I had read that. I do lurk in that forum quite a bit. However, I also find that alot of people don't 'find' the forum right away. Rather than waiting for people to find the forum, I happen to lurk on the whose online list, viewing the last pages of it, for people below level 10-15, clicking names and seeing who looks like they could use advice or a bit of help, and giving out buffs. I tend to end up answering questions for several hours either via the game, or on irc. Many times, I get told 'I wish I'd had someone help sooner' or "I wish I could have found someone willing to show me that before" - on the other hand, I've pointed many people at the forum who never noticed the link.

The reason I threw in those suggestions is not because I think they're something I'd want, but I do recall in past conversations about helping newbies many instances where of people wishing they got something for it, since they don't want to give out buffs, or so forth since it costs them stamina. I very strongly considered leaving it out of the latest edit of the idea, as it stands it is kicked to the very bottom, because it is little more than an afterthought. What I suggested is far far less than I've heard people indicate elsewhere that they'd like to get.

Do you think people should not try harder to find ways to make finding help easier, or just that people who don't find the forum, or don't have the time to spend waiting for an answer on it should be punished for it?

The link for the new player helpers would be sitting near the forum link, would it not???

I would not mind this suggestion if the rewards part was axed completely... I just don't wanna see help go all materialistic... it is the last thing the community here needs...
