With the present game mechanics, the only reasonable way of bidding in auction house without fear of paying too much is last second bidding known as sniping. As a result, players that have fast internet connections (or supernatural reflexes) receive unfair advantage over those who don't. Moreover, it creates confusion in pricing and makes it common for players to bid much higher than the actual price of an item is to ensure that they get it. To resolve this, I suggest an idea, originally posted here, that should make things a bit less challenging in terms of speed and a bit more challenging in terms of money.

The original intention of any auction is to determine the selling price for an item by taking all offers into account. An auction should stop only when no one is willing to bid more, not when a certain amount of time passes. Any other approach results in wrong pricing. So, how to make things right in FS?

I think that the easiest way of doing this without changing things much would be allowing any bid that is made in the last minute of an auction to extend auction time, making it 1 minute again. Time can be adjusted but the idea itself could prove very useful. Market price would be determined more precisely and it shouldn't result in huge delays thanks to the +5% bid requirement.

Nope im against this idea.

some people may not have enough money to buy stuff so his only option is to snipe a cheap item at the last sec with the golds he have to save him enough trouble from finding another cheap items that can let him buy it.

You shouldn't be able to do that in the first place. An item's price is determined by the market not by the speed of your clicking. If they don't have enough money to buy something, it's their own problem. In most cases, however, they do..

It is only a speculation, but I suspect that this idea might also increase the effectiveness of Special Potions as a gold sink, motivating and allowing players to bid more for them.

And.. Don't write gold in plural!

However - how do we handle this:

I carefully select the items I want to bid on. Making sure that all the auctions end before I need to leave for work. I do my research and planning. And strategically bid at last second properly. And, it extends. And someone else... and someone else... and I have to go to work. I think this is problematic for so many reasons. There are umpteen threads on this. I lose stuff to snipers all the time because I don't sit in screen (or use a plugin) 24/7. It's part of the game. If you bid high enough you won't get sniped. That's what I do if I want to guarantee I don't lose it.

It seems that you have answered your own question.

If you bid high enough you won't get overbid.

Auctions have nothing to do with strategic planning. They set the right price for an item. If you are not willing to pay that price, you should not be able to buy it.

Actually auctions don't have to set the "right" price for an item. If you think auctions aren't strategic don't play on E-Bay. Auctions are one of the MOST strategic marketplaces that exist. Blind Dutch Auctions remove most of this strategy, but even in this setting there are strategies employed.

There are about 5 threads with this kind of suggestion. Sniping is a long-standing auction practice for closed-end non-blind auctions. So long as we have this type of auction there will be sniping. I do it, and I lose to it. It's part of the game. And, imho it should be. I've suggested Blind Dutch Auctions (for house auctions) which would eliminate any need for sniping and would actually set the "right" price as much as possible for auction items. But it didn't get much attention.

BDA's need to be a part of FS... >_>
Though I'd like it if they were in addition to the AH.

I posted this idea a week or so ago about any bids that are recieved when there is less than a minute left on the auction extend the auction to 1 minute, due to the delay that the system takes to notify you, as well as click time and such.
