Bad idea. Here is a much better idea.
Give all new players 1 fsp, and the instruction they can buy a pick axe for 1 fsp from me.
No, that would be free FSP and would encourage multis.
Did you know that there are likely over 2000 rouge black holes in our galaxy alone. Each of them can reach very high speeds, even in space terms, are each capable of destroying anything in their path, and are invisible. Well, goodnight!

Equip 'em with a better item: Rune of Phale (now lowered to level 1) that way, they become pessimistic and quit.
Oops, did I reveal my plan out loud?
Just kidding. Equip them with the best set available, all new from scratch of course, which is bound and only lasts up to level 10. Once you hit level 10, your armor disappears and a message is sent to you on recommended armor. You can always get rid of your Tutorial Armor before level 10 of course.

Not "Sign up now and spend all the gold/FSP you start with buying a 2 gold weapon for king's-ransom prices off price-gouging anti-musketeers! All for me and none for you!"
Still with me? O.o

Anyways, I still vote no, starting the game is allready quite simple without giving freebies. A guided walkthru before starting might be better. Show the noob that he should buy a pick axe, and where he can buy it, much more usefull than giving it to him. He would not LEARN from it.
What might be usefull is a small sum of gold, say 250, so he is able to buy one right away.
Proper instructions in a fun way is much more usefull that giving out freebies. Let him buy the axe so he can find his way to the AH and learn how things go about in FS.

Isn't it usually the other way around? "I haz a SWard! Gimme yer Munny!"
Even a rock or a stick would make more sense...

Set Name "Hand Me Down"
Gloves : Moth Eaten Wool Gloves : Dur 3 : +2 damage
Helm : Rat-eaten Leather Cap : Dur 3 : +1 defense +1 armor
Amulet : Tarnished Copper Choker : Dur 3 : +1 attack +1 damage
Weapon : Corroded Iron Poker : Dur 6 : +2 damage (would look like a fire place poker)
Armor : Moldy Hide : Dur 3 : +1 defense +1 armor
Shield : Termite Infested Wooden Buckler : Dur 3 : +1 defense +1 armor
Ring : Cheap Copper Circle : Dur 3 : +1 attack +1 armor
Boots : Soleless Rathide Sneekers : Dur 3 : +1 defense +1 damage (lol maybe not the best name but it's funny) (Maybe "Worn Foot Wrappings"
Rune : Pittance of Life : Dur 3 : +2 HP
No set Bonuses, No "Add on" modifiers. This would at least let people get to level 4 or so with something. Maybe give each player 25 gold, or 50 gold IN BANK for repairs and stuff?
Another thing for the noobies could be a starter story sent to the message log when they log in for the first time?
How does this sound
"Welcome to the world of Fallen Sword, where great adventure and many dangers await. Some of them will be from monsters you face, others might be from players who want what you have. You start out with almost nothing, some hand me down gear, and the last bit of gold from buying it. Venture forth into the world of Fallen Sword and seek your destiny. As you grow stronger you will meet other players, possibly join a guild, or make your own, and fight many different and ever stronger monsters. The road ahead may be tough at times. Keep growing stronger, venture out into more and more worlds, and become a part of this ever growing and changing place.
In your travels you will level up and get POINTS you can spend on different stats to strengthen your char. As you grow in strength your talents will grow as well, and you will be able to cast boosts on yourself and others to increase strength, to grow faster, or even make more money. These SKILLS will serve you well, but be careful once you chose to learn a skill, or apply your level up points it takes a very rare item to unlearn them ... Fallen Sword Points
It is rumored that these exist and there are many ways to get them, some times they will be offered for doing a special service to others, or maybe if you make enough while hunting you can get them from the Market Place, if another player wishes to sell it. You will have to find out more on your own.
Now venture forth and make your mark on this WORLD."
Okay so the ending needs some help and it's a bit long winded. I'm tired, I ramble when I get this way. Maybe I'm just used to the OLD OLD OLD school RPGs where you got like 5 or 10 minutes of background story before you started playing the game. . . . I think I got a little off topic here

Start them with the pickaxe equipped and maybe also start them at the store that sells the mystic pick axe recipe and the mystic ivy. Maybe even have the guy at Timoths Wares welcome them to the game and tell them about how to make the mystic pick axe... New players would likely stay a lot longer in the game if they were given a helping hand like this
Great idea!
