Which is Better?

Lets say a guild has a sizeable chunk of inactives/retired and wanted to get rid of them. Which method is better?
These are my thoughts
1. Little by little.
Advantages:
You never get into a deep exp lock and so it looks better from the outside.
You are able to slim down the gear held in BPs gradually.
Disadvantages:
You are succeptable to GvG attacks as the inactives make easy targets.
You will not have the appearance of being in exp lock but will not be growing either,
2. One mass kicking.
Advantages:
You will have a better chance in GvG as you will not be storing easy targets.
You will be rid of all the dead weight and have a new beginnings of sorts
Disadvantages:
There will be alot of gear which will need to be put somewhere so investment in the GS and BPs will be needed
You will be in a deep exp lock.
These are just my thoughts. I would love to hear others opinions on the matter and perhaps ye could point out other advantages and disadvantages that I may have not seen.

Why would this ever matter? Who cares what other guilds think?

I would be on the same mindset, but I wanted to present all the arguements I could think of

Mass kick followed by a recruiting drive, in my opinion. The overall health of your guild is much more important than another guild's perceptions.
Inactives can make your guild seem even worse to other guilds anyway.. Better looking if all of your players are active.

The main hardship is having to kick those, or contemplating kicking those that helped to make the guild what it was, but are now no longer playing, past founders etc. Not just someone who joined and quit, but part of the foundations.

I'm am part of the foundations.... I'm hoping my guildies will kick me, if I go inactive for a long period of time or retire. (Though I'll leave and start a solo guild to retire in)
But my statement still stands. Overall health of the guild is more important and I'm sure a good founder/co founder will agree and understand.
P.S. You could always let them back on, if they become active again.

One of reason I left my last guild a year ago was because they didn't want to kick the inactives...
So we were a couple of persons that had a sizeable amout of XP that left and the guild lost alot of XP anyways...
Less XP would have been lost by kicking all inactives

Per se, inactives make great temporary storage spots
In the long run though its better to clean up and I agree with reg's comments on this

@ Susto: Yes, you are correct.. but if you have the room, it should be done.
I would change this for...
Yes, you are correct... but if you have the room, it MUST be done.

You will be in deep XP lock, but at least you can fight your way to get out of it. If you do it gradually, then everytime you get out of lock, you will just go back in again and never really know where you are.
Also, mass kicking followed by mass recruiting should help you get out of lock a lot quicker, kicking gradually means you can only recruit gradually and you are not really solving the problem of the inactives.

Recruiting. You want your guild to look good, otherwise some people won't even think about it. If you see a guild several million xp into the xp lock, is your first thought that it's a fast growing guild, or a dead guild?
