I like the pink one the best...

just keep trying and experimenting with brushes and plain fonts. eventually you will start getting the hang of it. :) Good Luck

I would drop the current font your using, and replace it with Arial or veranda. Both are very good fonts and don't stand out to much. The focus of the avatar should not be the text, but the image your presenting.

I don't personally make avis yet, but can say it's a nice render, but the background is a bit plain and the font doesn't fit it much

just what I got and remember I'm not to into this stuff I want to lean too hehe

Good luck man 8)

If that doesn't work, there are some more in-depth tutorials on how to construct paths using the pen tool, and using paths in your signatures. I'd say the pen tool is the most diverse tool in photoshop. If you're making a signature, you can use it to create uniform or pattern based selections; or even add straight or curvy lines that match or compliment your flow. If you are rendering an image from a stock file, you can use the pen tool to select the focal apart from the background, which is actually the best way to render, and then there are many other countless applications for the pen tool. However, like everything in photoshop, there does become a point where if you rely solely upon it, you can use it too much, and it'll ruin the overall effect/composition of your pieces.

GIMP has a paths tool, which is essentially the same thing afaik.

Good luck,
Xel.

Ps: I also have a post somewhere in the stickies of this board which goes into surface detail on all the basic graphic principles you'd want to learn to get started with making signatures and avatars. Cheers. :]
