Anyone know the fonts used on these avatars and where i could download them

As far as fonts go, stick with 'clean' or 'san serif' fonts. Ie: http://dafont.com/theme.php?cat=501, http://new.myfonts.com/tags/clean/.

As far as text placement goes, placement on the first avatar is bad, placement on the second one is good. Text should not go in a corner, ever; text is also optimal near the focal, an easy place to put text is by the focal's face if it is a person. If you ever do use more than 1 word or line of text, you should have the 2 groups of text close to each other, not widely spread apart.

Check out the link I posted earlier in regards to helping you learn the pen tool, that same resource will teach you a lot of other basic concepts that would excel your work much further; the same goes for that sticky I mentioned.

Cheers,
Xel.

If you use a gradient, make sure you lower the opacity and set the gradient on a different blending mode.

In the area where you can arrange your layers, at the top of that little box is a blending tool and opacity setting.

Blending isnt a setting, its just a term that refers to how a layer 'blends' with others.

To set a gradient map, go to layer>new adjustment layer> gradient map then just set the blending mode to color and the opacity to 50 percent and choose what kind of gradient you want.
