we don't generally use realistic backgrounds for such flat/animated kind of images. The text is too big and at the wrong place. Google- The rule of the thirds . and It's too monotonous probably in the try to blend that guy in the background I assume. Colors are better unless you have really good depth and contrast in the piece ^_^
Try the tutorials in the sticky threads. and use the resources ^_^

Yeah, pretty much just blending, and find a new background. Not realistic, something fake :)

ah that's not necessary AA . That just depends on your style. However images with low depth look too flat when monotonous and those with low contrast look messy.

Here this is B&w and does not look sad at all I think ^_^
I used B&W only because the focal is in good contrast to the BG :)

neverpool... I meant something like a texture or something out of some lousily made anime.

or just a plain texture. but you would need nice smudge or dodge/burn knowledge to make that look good ^_^
