The actual mechanics of how arena battles work need to be fundamentally changed. How? I'll leave that to the smart people to figure out. Just take out most of the luck factor. You can still leave in a little luck, but at least make it less than 50% luck, please.
I think the arena mechanics aren't too bad how they are, I'm not sure how they could be greatly improved. Changing combat to 60 rounds was a good move towards preventing people from maxing defense and not worrying about any other stats.
The arenas without moves usually have a lot more luck involved, but the arenas with moves have more skill involved. At least newbies still have some sort of a vague chance at the moment although they still normally lose in the first or second round.
If you changed the arena so that the people with the best gear (which is often the most expensive gear) almost always won and/or the people with the sneakiest moves almost always won, then some people would get sick of losing and give up. There's already enough of the rich getting richer in this game, and I would hate to see it get worse.
I really don't think you can keep everyone happy with the arena no matter what you do, just like with PVP. But in the short-term, rotating the prizes, adding some decent potions, and getting rid of the crap ones would definitely help.

Don“t mix apples and pears.
the rotation and the spawning and the selection of range/ moves/non-moves /epic non epics is one thing. its HCS failure to adress this that has caused arena to stall badly.
The basic mechanisms of arena are not to blame .
( My idea would be have a few brackets in arena for those that won less tourneys. )

Yes, look at the other extensive arena threads and you will know what I mean. When a move like Weaken activates 50% of the time whether the person hits you or not, that is a problem. When a move like Crush is literally unstoppable, that is a problem. I noticed no fundamental changes when the battles were moved from 40 rounds to 60 rounds. I also have friends who are arena champions who will tell you that sometimes it takes MORE skill to win a no move arena than it does to win one using moves! As I said, I am not smart enough to explain it all, or what types of changes need to be made, but these have been eloquently discussed and explained in other arena threads. If Hoof & Co. read them and make note, then the arena will have a chance at being resurrected.

I disagree. 50% chance to remove only 25% defense isn't too harsh, and if weaken is being used it's because the person can't hit you, so why should they have to hit you to activate it? If they hit you, you're probably going to die anyway. While a person is using weaken they're giving their opponent a free chance to try to get them with a piercing strike, spin attack, etc. Personally I think it's balanced.
I think crush is balanced too. Armor guys already get it pretty good in the arena.. making it vulnerable vs counter attack would possibly tip arenas in favour of the armor player, at the moment it's reasonably balanced. You could argue that it's unfair that armor players have a 100% retaliation rate vs piercing strike. Perhaps 75% retaliation vs piercing strike and 25% vs crush would be better.
If a player does go very high damage/moderate defense/low attack and use crush to try to take out armor guys in the first round, they're making themselves vulnerable to attack/defense players using weaken and spin attack. The armor guys can always wear more armor to counter it.. with sets like chumanas, deaths head, and nuryns around, and the lower level armor epics, it can't be that hard (although all of that gear is pretty expensive at the moment).
Crush doesn't upset the paper/scissors/rock aspect of the arena IMO.
Changing arenas to 60 rounds gives the armored player a higher chance to beat the 'defpacker' with defense and nothing else. Sure it doesn't give the armored player a 100% chance of success but it tips the odds in their favour mathematically. Give the arena more rounds and more people will just max armor instead of defense if they aren't already. So yeah, a higher number of rounds doesn't stop turtling in every form but it does work against people who just enter in their offline relic defense sets.

God save the Arena, Long live the King, The king is dead
In RL I am both semi-atheist and republican ( as in anti-monarchy).
So it should be : Cows save the arena, arena junkies all over the world -unite!
