The first avatar I ever made:

I'm using Paint.net. I might get gimp if I start making avatars.

Its really good for the first avatar. You have a good eye for graphics. Btw, Id suggest you get gimp or photoshop to make your graphics, all the other programs $uck$ :P

Well, you haven't worked any lighting effects or depth there, if that is possible with the program you're using... The colours and effects are just plain, not bad btw.

Well if you want to get technical all any of us really do is take a render or stock, add some effects and put text on it. Granted most of us take a lot of time to do our piece but when you get right down to it your description could go for anybodies work.

Not bad for a first piece Steam. Like Wes said, maybe try Gimp or Ps if you want to learn more.

Point taken, but that's just the stock, plus an olive green spray painted layer on top. However, I understand that when we all start, we begin from text slaps. I agree with Wes in that you have a good eye, doesn't look like a text slap from first glance. Hope you download GIMP.

it's very good for a first one...seems to me you have a 'touch'...and there's nothing much that can be than with that image (for a beginner). Download photoshop and practice...that's it :)

On a scale of 1-10 how much did I know when I started?

...-1,000,000.

Depending on how you learn, you can either use tutorials or be like me and fiddle with all the settings and stuff Gimp has to offer.

Also, just observe and ask questions! Seeing all types of art can inspire you to try new techniques.

That link's pretty useful by giving you resources and letting you know some of the terms used frequently.

I've been looking for a tutorial on how to create a basic sig. Like the one (LadyPike?) posted a while ago that went over putting renders with stocks and some of the basic elements you need to try to cover. Haven't found one yet.

looks good, though try not to force the lighting so much, make it go with the light in the original image and not be quite that obvious. There is also a lot of empty space on the left that you could fix by just moving over the tiger.

also, just a preference of mine, most sigs look better with a 1 pixel black border.

A lot better than my first graphics :D

Hows this? I tried to make it darker on the left and lighter on the right, i just didn't know how to move the tiger to the left a bit more since I already saved it.

I meant more of don't use a white blob on the canvas as a light source, usually you will want to have your light source out side of the image and be shining in. And make sure to always save your sigs and avatars as a .xcf (gimp) or .psd (PS) so that you can edit them later.
