I had always assumed that "DPS" was "Damage Per Second".

That interpretation is certainly consistent with the stats given on bows, where they list a damage, a firing rate and a DPS that are all consistent with this.

But then I read the "spectral barrage" write up, where it talks about each arrow dealing "75% ranged DPS", and taking 0.5 seconds. Does this mean that spectral barrage is doing 75% ranged DPS, or that each arrow does 75% of the ranged damage? I presume, given the level of this talent, that it means the latter, but the usage is ambiguous.

I'm now training up  a mage, and finding the same problems there. Overload delivers 175% spell DPS, but takes 1.5 seconds to cast. Does that mean it does 175 * 1.5 damage per spell?

From context and from usage within the game, it seems as though "DPS" is used both as a damage and as a damage rate, which is unfortunately ambiguous.

Or does the "S" stand for something else entirely?

You can treat it as "Damage Per Second for basic attacks". Take DPS shown on your weapon, which is equal to

[attacks per second] * (min dmg + max dmg ) / 2,

add DPS from attack power - it seems to be [attack power] / 14.9 (don't ask me why 14.9 - I have no idea ),

add any modifiers you might have from talents and you will get your base DPS.

This base is shown on your statistics window for three different attack types and counts as a modifier for all skills/spells.

Charging/casting time doesn't matter. So if you see sorcery DPS 100 on your statistics window you can expect your normal (not critical, not glancing) overload on enemies with 0 spell defense doing 175 damage to first, 145 damage to second and 115 damage to third enemy.

Which is really just saying that "DPS" is used both as "damage" and "rate of damage" in different contexts - actually, sometimes in the same context. Your interpretation is the one I had been working on, but the language doesn't really say that.

Incidentally, your 14.9 factor is 15.75 for my ranger (level 35) and 13.13(4) for my level 21 mage. Its the same factor for all three traits (melee, ranged, sorcery) in each case.
