Returning to the OP, a downloadable client is not a big stretch, programming-wise. It's just a matter of replacing the services the browser normally provides as a stand-alone Java application with an executable launcher for each possible platform: secure authentication, keeping jar file(s) and other DLC up to date, wrapper toplevel window interface, etc.. But the business case for diversion of precious developer resources to do it at this point probably isn't there. There are so many other things that are far more important, especially during this early phase of the launch:
1. Dealing with server scaling issues, and general support and bug-fixing for a whole new, larger group of players. The more successful the game, initially, the bigger this issue is.
2. Implementing missing content: levels 40-50 and endgame play.
3. Implementing critical missing MMO mechanics: guilds, AH and mail systems.
4. Graphics engine upgrades - offloading processing to graphic cards, which in turn will allow wider camera angles, and later possibly more detailed graphics (though the art people are also needed for that to occur).
Given the scope of the above list (plus maybe other issues, since I am not privy to insider details), don't expect a standalone client any time soon.
