since lots of mages are using a shield now i would like to make a discussion about it
Here is a screenshot of my stats with full tr gear, zeus bolt, and lvl 39 vigor amulet with a searing fang/glim topaz in it and axe shield/glim peri in it(side note my essence is a 48 HoH essence it has no spell att/haste roll so it isnt affecting this) (no buffs/all attribute points in sorc, i'm a pvp prophet/mage hybrid)

Spoiler

here is the same build/gear with a TR staff, double gem slots (defined topaz/glim topaz socketed)
Spoiler

in my opinion, the block/hp/defense makes up for the ~100 dps/slight bit of haste lost, plus with using a shield you can use righteous defense for 25% dmg reduction for 12 seconds

what do you guys think??? would a shield mage be useful for things other than pvp such as AoE grinding/general gameplay??

a 1 handed sorc weapon would work pretty nice, a wand would be too weak though... mace/morningstar would be cool :P

forgot to include this: ive seen lots of rangers use shields, maybe its time for mages to start, rangers have 1h ranged weapons only though, mages do not

It's clear from this that they don't need to add 1 handed sorcery weapons. The stat loss is minimal.

You didn't mention that your healing power is about 900 less with the shield on. That might be significant.

The biggest factor with this kind of build is the loss of talent points. I messed around with a block mage a bit and I had about 15 talent points in templar. While my staff mage can spare about 7 or 8 without losing essential prophet skills, I can't spare 15. Also, when I built a block mage, I found having too many defensive skills as more of a hinderance than something worthwhile. Perhaps, you didn't invest 15 talent points though in your build.

It's cool that they game allows hybrid builds at least.

My personal opinion is that that extra 10% in a tough situation is worth the sacrifice to defense. If a person pays attention and uses Radiance at the right times, you really don't need a shield when in a group. When it comes to a mage build, plasma shield is so useful, i see no reason to need any more defensive skills. So, I consider hybrid builds like this to be a bit of a novelty to add interest to the game.

Ah the melee life... So simple. Equip weapon, stab/bash things.

We dont need to think about things like this, lol

If your a prophet, just socket a saph into the fang instead of a topaz to mostly make up for healing power. and yeah i agree, dont need a 1h sorc wep really.  i messed around with tank mage for defensive stance/dmg reduction talents but i put too many points into vit for it to be effective. i had about 10k hp and 700 something dps, i tried like 3 different builds. heres my current build, pvp prophet mage

Spoiler

no radiance/plasma shield, so a shield/block rating is useful

My observation of icecrafter's shield build is that it appears to be dependent upon Topaz power. My level 39 mage, with staff, has approximately 150 less dps than his shield build, and ChicagoStorm has 15 more attribute points applied to sorcery. If you really want to compare shield mage to staff mage, you have to pull all the gems first. Because yes, once you have enough Topaz power you have massive dps even with the loss of the sorcery points provided by a staff.

this is somewhat wrong/right. most lvl 40 mages that i know of have one of the following
crafted tr staff with 2 glims/defined/absolute topaz/tr staff with double att power roll, for essence crafted essence with topaz/essence with high spell att roll
but yea you would need to remove gems to get base dmg for this
