How Plasma Lord Has Sorted Itself Out
Plasma Lord is in a PvP area. Sometimes killing occurs around Plasma Lord but for the most part all people work as a team to kill it (which makes it go faster and easier). The rankings, which in essence are the prizes, appear to now have a rather random distribution to all who participated. I think overall Plasma Lord works rather well, although there is really no reason for it to be in a PvP area.
How Troll Appears to Be Sorting Itself Out
The troll gives very good potential loot (so I hear) but only to the party that tags it first. Let's run through some of the requirements and incentives...
1) The troll, for all intents and purposes, requires a tank to defeat.
2) There is no incentive for anyone except the party that tagged the troll to participate in killing it.
3) Based on (1) and (2), the tagging party must have a tank.
4) It is possible to defeat the troll with a two person party of tank and healer.
5) Because the troll only drops two items (i.e., low number of items but potentially very high value) it creates an incentive for the tagging party to have the minimum number of people (tank and healer).
In essence, the Troll is merely a race to the troll with a tank and healer in the party. Or perhaps a tank can race and ask for a healer. Or, perhaps a tank is also a healer and needs nobody.
This design, in my opinion, is abysmal. It does not encourage participation from the community whatsoever. It is merely a high value handout to a tank/healer party who is able to reach it first. It alienates DPS, although perhaps the tank/healer party will invite one DPS in order to speed things up. The fact that time and energy was put into such an atrocious system leaves me for a lack of words.
The Irony
The irony with both these world bosses is that they appear to be in the wrong places. Plasma Lord is a world boss that encourages multiple people working together yet is put in a PvP area where there is little point to killing the other players there.
The Troll, however, has a design which makes you want to kill the tagging party and take control of it yourself, yet it is placed in a non-PvP area. This makes no sense!
My preference would be if both bosses worked more like Plasma Lord. My suggestion is to change the loot distribution of Troll to encourage widespread participation rather than hoarding by a few select players. But if you are going to have a boss with loot distribution like troll, THIS boss needs to be in a PvP area.
You guys essentially got the concept of World Bosses backwards...
