After a bit of thinking and some interaction just now, I'm seeing a major negative on this change.
It may well be because I'm a freak and actually try to help new players, lol.
Anyway, it's really difficult to keep an eye on new players with this change. They all look alike.
It's really difficult to keep track... for example, just saw one Guest attempt to put up a URL in the Global Chat.
Solution? Well, I'm not really sure exactly "how" this was supposed to "speed things up" and I'm not sure how long they have to pick a name, but I'd kind of rather see them pick a login name and then allow them to have the same option to change it in the same time frame.
I get the idea of being stuck with a lame name and wishing you'd chosen something else.... I think that's a plus.

As for why shifting the character name was important, I feel it was a hurdle to joining the game. I know myself if I play an web / mobile game and if the first thing it asks me to do is name a character that I have no affinity with it can make me just not bother. Also I might like to try the game before deciding what to call my character. We'll know by looking at the stats in around a week as we track how many players complete the tutorial each day etc and I'll be happy to share if it's had an improvement or not with you
Just saw I was actually the last one to post here, lol. Well... I've had some more interaction with "guests".
They kind of reinforced my previous post. Both were negative experiences in accepting one in Guild and another seeing one in the Global Chat.
As I said before, I think Hoof's points (and some others made in this post) are valid and I quoted because I'm wondering if the stats were indeed followed. I'm also not sure what the requirements currently are. Is it time in game? When do players have to choose a name? I'm assuming there is some caveat somewhere.
At this point my "compromise suggestion" would be the following:
Have the name choice be tied to completion of the Tutorial.
I know that this is in no-way fool-proof (I'll save you all from my thoughts on that), but I think it might be a way to avoid the major issues (one of which was hilariously illustrated by duktayp) that made this a consideration from the start.
