I decided to try this game since it was free (on Steam) and my ultimate feedback is this: the game is tedious. Like many MMORPGs, there's a lot of work the game wants you to do rather than actually play.
COMBAT: Basically WoW. It's basically pressing buttons. Not much depth at least in the early going when first impressions are made. That is if auto-attack is off...if it's one, I think the game kinda plays for you. I actually wasn't sure what was happening when it was on: my skills kept activating. Anyways, you'll get levels like "kill X of this kind of bad guy" and it's all very typical.
CRAFTING: You can basically craft a lot. I don't know how the "player economy" works or if there even is one but this is where a lot of the tedious works come in. I got a quest from the armorsmith to make a copper belt. Fine. I have to not only collect cooper which I can live with even. What I couldn't? Having to walk ALL THE WAY BACK TO WHERE I first "learned" how to make copper in order to mine it and then walk ALL THE WAY BACK. You know what I hate? Having to walk back and forth to places to basically run errans that the game sends me on.
It's true I only played two hours but it felt like a lot longer simply because of how much of the game's content is basically just sending you places and back.
As for the store, well if you subscribe you get extra XP gain and such so if it's not pay-to-win then it's pretty close.

You can disable auto-attack in settings. Pretty sure it's still there.
There are transportation methods like home stone, dragon, instant dragon, mounts, and Othalo teleport scrolls. Dragon is probaly main method of transportation anyways. Think they mentioned including another form of transportation at one point, but who knows.
Othalo is probaly the only place guilty of the distance thing - for the mine especially. And you do have to unlock flight paths so there is some exploring to be expected.
But should see other places like Nidaros - it has a mine, farm plots, shigras, and tailoring/blacksmith/bank close together.
And the quests from any profession tutor is optional. They are just for earning experience and artisan points. Not all of us even bother to do every single profession quest - the Gathering ones are much easier to complete.
Crafting isn't tedious. Gathering is and once you gathered a bunch, you could actually afk a few hours if you wanted.
The quests you'd want to do is the yellow ! above NPC's head or billboards and those are usually story quests. But most of the quests (some are side quests) do involve killing x or gathering y.
It is a story driven game though, and it's usually explained in dialogue why they make you do these boring things (and sometimes I just roll my eyes and call them lazy people).
And without supporter benefits, Eldevin wouldn't be a free game.
