#867929 Hiding Inactives From Top Rated List?

Posted by Pardoux on 10 May 2014 - 22:48

Personally, I find it amusing that folk want to keep historical top "xxx" lists ...

Imagine the following scenario ..

New player creates account. Finds his way around for a few days. Spots the "top xyz" lists and checks them out... All of them are full of inactive players. Now, what does that say to him about the game ? - that all the best players (according to the historical listings) have left the game for some reason. So, he thinks, why should I bother sticking around - there's obviously some reason all these players have quit ...

Now, dynamic "top xyz" listings would have the opposite effect .. Not only would they show that all players on said listings are still active and involved in the game (and thus it's still alive and kicking), but that the listings are more spread out, level wise - for instance ...

"Top Kill Streak"  :-  4 of the top 10 are inactive ..

"Top 250 Bounty Hunters" :- 2 of the top 10, inactive with a 3rd almost (currently) inactive

"PvP Smasher" :- 2 outta the top 10, inactive

"Top 250 Richest Players" :- 2 outta the top 10, inactive

"PvP Arena Champions" :- 5 outta the top 10, inactive - including the top 3 !

Top rated listings need to be a "CURRENT" representation of the game, not a "HISTORICAL" one - keep a historical one as well, by all means, but have the current one be the default view.

#866739 My suggestion on reviving the Arena

Posted by Tastria on 03 May 2014 - 14:56

Again, my newbie point of view.

If the arena was a store right now, I would be running around trying to find someone to wait on me, or even another customer. ("Gawd, it is SO good to see you!  Let's fight!")  This kind of inactivity also lends itself to the dubious behavior mentioned before, especially since a level ten, or a bunch of them, if they have the gold, could do a level 500 combat.  Depending on the rewards, it might be worth it. (keep in mind I just started here, I have no idea of the value of the items that could be won.)

What I really see now, is that the arena is as quiet as a funeral home in the after-hours.  This certainly doesn't encourage new blood into the arena.

My first thought on new comers thinking the arena was tilted in favor of more experience players was, "Can't these characters read?"  I always complain about the lack of decent tutorials in the game, but in the arena this is spelled out in short syllables, kind of hard to miss it IF you read anything about it.  That's not to say that there shouldn't be a tad more work in allowing the new comers to fight amongst themselves.  Just as an example:  A guildless player, or one from a small starter guild, is at a great disadvantage compared to a player who has many items of guild gear to choose from (I'm including myself here).

Rewards.  I'm all for rewards.  Medals are nice, but tangible virtual rewards are better! (an oxymoron if there ever was one  )  The current system seems to be centered on inventing arena gear. I've nothing against that, but it does take up a bit of your backpack, and if you don't have much space (9, count 'em, NINE chests!  Where the $#%@ am I going to put them before I loose them???) it starts to be a big problem.  Yes, if you've got the gold, or the FSP you can get more, but a newer player doesn't necessarily have either of those.  A reward of 1 extra stamina might work, and since it's worth 25,000 gold currently, it's not a bad reward. (Especially for an aspect of the game that uses no stamina :D )  It also doesn't flood the game with more gear. (The AH looks more like a rummage sale these days....)  A few shards might work too.

Part of the problem does lie with the bovines in the barn, and it doesn't require any coding, or any prizes (Grim, this is a FREE fix!!).  How about a tad of advertising in the various spots of the game once in a while?  By the looks of things lately, most new players come to hack and slash, and maybe use (shudder!) global chat. I went five years without having any idea about the arena (Thanks Brice and Yodamus!) and there are others out there, so a line like, "Have you tried the arena yet?  The newest participant is Goodgulf, level 8, who just won a flabble rune."  Of course this could be done for various game aspects too.

Just my thoughts as a newcomer.  I now return to the arena, to look longingly at the participant listings......

#866738 Chomper Event?

Posted by Pardoux on 03 May 2014 - 14:38

When composing came in, one of the essential consequences was going to be frequent legendary and stomper events. I guess the fragment GEs have removed this pressure, and allowed HCS to concentrate on the focii BG mentioned.

The need for frequent LE and Spine/Crystalline events is, unfortunately, negated by the very few options in composing to use substantial amounts of these fragments.

Methinks some of the potions need to be elevated in level but with a big increment in the higher fragment "cost" to drain these out of the game. Or, better still, just change the fragment global rewards to have 85% common fragments and 15% rare fragments in 'em ..

#866696 Arena Tips - Arena Advice - The Arena in General

Posted by Brice on 03 May 2014 - 05:06

ALL RIGHTY FS!!! Since starting my other Forum "suggestions on upgrades for the Arena", a lot of players here and in the game have said they have a hard time finding tips and advice about the Arena. So I figured what the heck why not put all my cards on the table...step up...and help out new comers to the Arena :)
Let me start by saying I'm going to spill my guts and most of my knowledge but if your here just looking for a freebie Arena setup your not going to find it and I hope anyone that may post things here won't either, but all are welcome to post what they like about the Arena here. I only say this because I myself have worked hard building my Arena sets through trial and error, also, I find that this is one of the most intriguing parts of the Arena that you learn as you go and figure out how the Arena works. I will give tips and pointers on how to build an Arena setup ...at least how I did it and still do it :)
LETS GET STARTED!!!
WELCOME NEWBIES TO THE ARENA!!!
Basic Arena info 101:
So your interested in one of the best parts of of Fallen Sword(the Arena) but you don't know where to start or how to win one...well guess what...hate to break it to ya...but you will lose more than you will win and if it was easy there would be no fun in it ha!!! That's what I love about it...it's tough to win but when you do you will get hooked :D
BE PATIENT AND DONT GET DISCOURAGED
1. When starting out you need to be selective in what you enter...focus on getting all of your combat moves and enter Gold and Item Arena's that don't require them...this way it's fair for you and you don't need combat moves to win.
2. Combat Moves: you need these to be successful in the Arena...most important ones needed Pierce Strike(PS), Power Attack(PA),Crush,Weaken,Spin Attack(SA),Counter Attack(CA),Deflect,Dodge,Critical Hit(CH),and Freeze...the other combat moves are ok and you still need to acquire them, but these are the ones you will end up using the most. I suggest that you enter every combat move Arena available to you.
3. Types of Arena's to enter...you need to pay attention to what type of Arena your entering...if it has a check mark in the box then it's active in that Arena...example...Epics allowed, Hell Forged stats, Combat Moves...if it has an "X" in the box then it's not active and stats, equipment, or combat moves will not count.
4. PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT OTHER PLAYERS ARE DOING...how did they win...were they in an Armor setup or a Defensive setup....you can tell by how the battle plays out...every Arena setup can be beat or countered.
5. When entering a non-combat move Arena there is what's called the fatigue system,in which, after every 10 combat rounds your stats will weaken until there is a winner...if entering with an Armor setup make sure you have at least 61hps due to there are 61 rounds in an Arena.
That's it for this part...Best of luck!!!

Brice has excellent ideas and others have contributed cool positive input, let's keep that going and get away from dwelling on the cheats, as it seems to me it derails the topic a bit.  Definitely pointing fingers here isn't productive - submit that as a ticket.  Yes, I'm also guilty of participating in the derailing and my apologies to Brice on that.

Fleshing out the idea of randomization seems positive though.

I respect the ideas here even though I'm not an arena player, only a dabbler and want us to get back to the positive.

Let's all sing ...

" You've got to accentuate the positive,

Eliminate the negative,

And Latch on to the affirmative,

Don't mess with Mister In-Between"

.... and while I'm no kid, I'm not old enough to have been around when this song was popular, in case you're all doing the math right now -  but I still like it  :P  - - - Kath

Cheating & Arena

In response to Command14's post ..... I do beg to differ that unfortunately you can cheat a bit in arena.  I have had a couple people approach me asking me to not change my gear and enter a specific arena, and to not change gear so that I would be an auto-loss (it wasn't a match for the specified arena.  One person told me that they were going around and asking several people.  Of course they can't control all the players in the arena, but they can improve the odds.

Their justifications: first person wanted to finish off their 1st 100 arena wins; and the other wanted the item from the arena for some planned inventing project.

I didn't help these two players out - I'm too competitive for it for one thing.  I can handle loosing, but I can't stand not trying.  Also I'm nice & helpful, but not enough to compromise my values.

This all being said, it's my opinion that arena is the hardest area of the game in which to cheat, thus it's my hope that it's very limited in scope.

Yes, the only way to cheat in arenas is to have friendly 'bunnies' join arena matches (this happens a lot especially on matches with lucrative prizes - Brewer's Art, Well Read, and Twinkle Toes).

Randomizing first round starting match-ups is fairly easy to do, so I'm a bit surprised this wasn't implemented in the first place.

An indicator to show guildmate names/the number of guildmates who joined an arena match is also needed...

why a great winner like Nagoyaka dont wana tell anything about this? when you lose 99% of the important battles like hapend when fighting with this user in finals you will think twice if you want or dont want to be envolved in arena. i like arena but i dislike cheaters. and one more questions, its ok to put a friend to fight with you in first round just like

#864203 Suggestions regarding XP Gain. (Has been diverted slightly into Accelerated l...

Posted by Gutie on 21 April 2014 - 06:16

In light of how many players view reaching EOC starting out or even from the mid 3-digit levels, highly implausible. I've been mulling over a few suggestions to alleviate this.

One such is a few changes to XP Gain.

1) Remove the scaling down at lower levels (below Level 500).

2) Increase the amount of XP Gain epics give by a factor of 10 or even 25. (At a higher level it's negligible anyhow, but at lower levels it will make some items, such as Fire Dragon Ring, Leaf Dragon Rune and the Gurguiss Crystalline set at least somewhat useful again.)

3) Increase the amount XP Gain upgrade gives by either 25 or 50 per investment. (To be blunt, the amount xp gain gives relative to levels was never adjusted as content was added. It is most effective in the 400-800 zone and almost laughable from 1300 on, likely ever increasingly so later on. Give more incentive to invest in this character upgrade. The gap between newer and higher up players is to the point of absurdity. This can be a tweak that benefits everyone equally, and also aids in players feeling that they are making notworthy progress into the game.)

4) Alternatively or in fact in addition to these changes, increase the base xp gain per hour to 5 times what it currently is not related to added via upgrades/equipment.

5) When adding the next portion of the Epic Quests, instead of Stamina gain. Made a large amount of XP gain per hour, plausibly 500 per hour or even 1000 per hour.

In the grand scheme of things, the end goal is player retention.

As things are, a non-donor has literraly no chance to reach EOC in the current setup of FS. Even with these changes, it's pretty close to impossible save for possibly 3-5 years of CONSTANT activity, even then highly unlikely.

I think these changes to XP Gain can assist players, (particulalry donors moreso than others in the case of #3), though through leveling gold gained from creatures at higher level can then be converted over to FSP to seek out said upgrade.

In the grand concept of these changes to XP gain, we can see a bit of an uptick in player growth as well as a possible overall morale boost that the notion of being behind EOC players at a scale I've seen in no other MMO I've played, can be slightly alleviated, and thus continual activity by players can get the rest rolling out.

I believe we can then give new or long term gone, but returning players a solid boost to surge forward to feeling they can play a role in guilds they join to a larger degree than before without ever having to go and spam out current or reserve stamina beyond the existing Phoenix Reutrning Player system.

Anyhow, feel free to tear the concept to shreds, as I'm sure some are want to do, lol.

#863622 Development Roadmap (Updated 7th Mar 2014)

Posted by Pardoux on 18 April 2014 - 03:56

I'm all in favour of the cows now banning the FSH and, by default, ALL scripts ...

Most of the outstanding facilities offered by the FSH can be added in due course, but all players managed without it beforehand and can manage without it now.

Removing this and all scripts gives the cows an easier way to detect if players are running custom scripts and thus treat them accordingly ...

Hello Grim,
I want to start this post out by saying that I've really enjoyed playing FS over the years and made a lot of good friends from all over the world from it. I'm really impressed with HCS doing there best with keeping the game updated and interesting for everyone who plays it(this can't be an easy task for you guys) and that it takes time to achieve this. Thank you for keeping us up to date on how things are coming along :) The part of FallenSword that I'm completely hooked on is the Arena,in which, I'm looking forward in seeing what updates are coming to it in May.
I started a Forum concerning the Arena, and wouldn't expect any of the ideas posted in my Forum happening any time soon, but would love for HCS to take them into consideration for possible updates down the road. I have been impressed and very thankful to all the players that have responded, given there ideas, and expressed there opinions in my Forum(1,000 thank you's to all of you :) ) I understand your a very busy person, but if you could find the time to review my Forum or let the Great person in charge of the Arena to take a look I would be very grateful to you and HCS for taking the time to look into it.
Thank you Grim and all the Cows for all of your hard work in keeping this game fun and exciting :)

#863269 My suggestion on reviving the Arena

Posted by Mher on 16 April 2014 - 18:53

Hi all :):)  i've didn't read all the posts but i've taken some ideas and also i hope and i hope HCS will listen to us cause we are desperataly waiting for good improvements on arena since long time ago. I think it is very challenging part in entire fallensword.

THANK YOU BRICE AND ALL OTHER ARENA MATES FOR GIVING US THE OPPORTUNITY TO SCREAM AND SAY WE WANT CHANGES IN ARENA AND A GOOD ONES . :):) CHEERS.

I would like to see changes like the following:

1-  Winner and runner up tokens idea is mendetory :)  cause it is a encourages to play more and to challenge

2-  Raising the moves for example like entering enhancements moves. it would be good to have almost 33 moves, this way beginners at least will gain their medal and they will encouraged to play over 100 win and they will have more chances  ( we have now 16 moves)

3- I'm against that player can participate only a range cause so many times , the challenge and the fun are when you enter a higher level and win with unexpectable gear (Strategy)

4- It's good to see arenas for guild profits like money or GRP (cause  gvg are going down too in some point) cause after all arena is pvp fight, so you can represante your guild in a guild fight inside arena.

i'm not entering in details, in the way or in the rules of requested changes.

HCS we need changes, we need to make all players to participate in arenas and shake the whole game :D:D

Hats off for all arena mates  :)

#862926 Next Global Event with Frag Stash rewards?

Posted by Davros81 on 15 April 2014 - 06:30

Hi there.

They are intended to happen more frequently and I intend on running one very soon. Was just letting the initial events chests run down a bit. Will be halving the number of frags at least from the prize chests and increasing the Community total.

~ Grim

Would it be possible to reassign or distribute the total number of frags, so we get considerably more common frags than say Super Elite Frags, from the rewards chests? I still have more than I will ever need in terms of SE and Crustal frags. maybe the following split of the total received from the chest:

Common = 70%

Rare = 12%

Unique = 8%

Legendary = 5%

Crystalline = 4%

Super Elite = 1%

Or something in this sort of region. Very few potions currently use SE fragments so they get used infrequently, pretty much the same with the Crystal fragments too.

Just a thought as whilst I am a level 20 composer I still have over 3.6k SE and Crystalline frags left from the last global event.

Ta
