#882625 Open letter to the Cows

Posted by yotekiller on 28 July 2014 - 11:27

I tried making some suggestions via support ticket but was told they would not be accepted in that form even though it would be good for business.  OK fine, pretty straightforward ideas to increase your profit and I will post them here for everyone to see and comment on.

First, please remove the number of people playing from the main home page. It's depressing to see 931,123 people registered but only 799 actually playing. That's less than 1/10 of 1% of registered players actually playing the games. Showing the number of registered players is fine since a very large number implies active gaming but not as many people are willing to sign up for games that appear to be dead or dying.
Second, of the 799 people playing as I write this, 555 are playing Fallen Sword. FS has been and should continue to be your premier game. There is nothing wrong with diversifying but FS has been feeling the lack of love for quite some time. Unfortunately, that translates to lower player morale which means less recruiting and new players that do sign up get less encouragement to stay in the game. Even if you have to put a few other things on hold for a bit, redirecting resources to implement a huge blitz of improvements for FS would go a long way toward improving the morale of the existing players.
Third, something needs to be done to try and bring back inactive players. There is currently a program in place in FS for players to bring back inactives but the problem is that most players don't know each others real life contact information. You do. Each account must be registered with an e-mail address. My suggestion is to create some type of incentive package for returning players (or simply use the existing package) and send a notice to every e-mail on record. This should only be done after substantial improvements have been made to FS and then you can also detail the various improvements in your e-mail. Even if only 10% of the registered users become active then it will still be over 100 times the number of current active players and well worth whatever investment you make to get those numbers.
Thanks for your consideration of these matters.

#882352 If we implemented 3 FSH features, which would you pick?

Posted by BraveKath on 26 July 2014 - 03:00

Here is how the feature line up by popularity is looking so far smile.png

fsh_feature_list.jpg

By 'advanced feature' I mean that it should be something isn't on by default. Zorg had an idea to make a new 'advanced features' option you turn on in settings so new players aren't overwhelmed with features that tend to only be used by experienced players.

Hoof, as many of us have had the experience in this thread of "oh, yeah, I like that one too", could we just rank them all from 1 (most wanted) onward? A program like SurveyMonkey miht be able to allow players to do that easily and at no cost to you guys.

Not really arguing with the results, but MANY players don't want to mess with commenting in the forums, but given a simple straight-forward option to rank the FSH features might get more input and thus more satisfaction in the long run from the wider spectrum of players feeling engaged in the outcome, as well as more focused results.

Just a thought, Kath

P.S. I would hope 3 FSH features would be a beginning, and that there would be a schedule to roll out all that players would like to see. I realize you can't do it all with one fail swoop, unless you could just take FSH over, which would be just GRAND!

#882320 Development Roadmap (Updated 8th September 2014)

Posted by Hoofmaster on 25 July 2014 - 20:31

I'd like to hear an update about this too. Is there a more accurate estimate for this update? Days? Weeks?

Apologies for the delay on this one. Unfortunately BigGrim's been off the last couple of days not feeling too great,  but once he's back I'll have a look over the new item and medal ideas with him :)

#881770 Cursed Buffs

Posted by sohail94 on 24 July 2014 - 14:33

"0.2% per point stat bonus to your equipped rune. Excludes 'Gain' bonuses. Double chance of durability loss. Prevents Unbreakable from working while active."

Is this part of the description incorrect? Or happen so few that it is almost nonexistent?

I think it is correct, having used the buffs you can definitely feel just how quickly you lose durability but I haven't actually compared that to using No UB.

iirc when using No UB, items lose durability at a rate of 6% chance per item

so I would imagine Cursed buffs would double that to 12%  per item

Again it's safe to say all items would be affected, not just the ring/rune,

The description for the cursed buffs says "Prevents Unbreakable from working while active".

So does unbreakable not work at all? Or just not work on the rune/ring?

Doesn't work at all, seems a bit unfair given that it's only the ring/rune being boosted.

ALL gear is damaged, but that damage isn't doubled. All that happens that if you have the UB buff or running a UB potion, they will be ignored.

#880300 A note from the FSH Developer

Posted by Yuuzhan on 22 July 2014 - 01:17

I want to open up by apologizing to the community.  I took on a large responsibility when I signed up to do development on FSH, and I can’t help but feeling that I have let you down.  I know many of you have come to rely on the features that have been provided by those who have donated their time to help improve this game.

However as many of you have learned, the demands on my time at home and at work have shifted dramatically.  I now have a 19 month old son who I love spending as much time as I can with.  As you can well imagine the focus of my free time has gone away from idle time I can spend coding.  On top of this, I have recently shifted jobs to a better paying, but more demanding job.  At my last job (before I became a father) I could spend much of my days programming FSH in between projects at work.  As we are a much smaller company I work most days, and then into the evenings after the little one is tucked into bed.

About a 6 months ago I had talked with Hoofmaster about starting a Kickstarter campaign.  We have always discussed the option of HCS hiring me officially to port all the FSH code into native Fallensword Code.  This option would have taken the financial burden off of HCS and allowed to community to really have a say in what they wanted ported over.

Alas, I could not start the campaign in good conscience knowing that it might be more than a year before all the work would be completed.  The only time I could really dedicate to the work would be off hours when the baby is sleeping – cutting into the precious time that I have to sleep or into the time that I could be spending with my son as he explores the world around him.

It is unfortunate that the other members of the FSH team have been burnt out over the years of maintaining the series of hacks that is FSH, or simply lost interest in the game itself.  I want to say that I really do enjoy programming FSH.  It makes me sad to see the string of messages that I get when HCS improves their code causing a section of FSH to break (or when GreaseMonkey updates causing all of FSH to break).

The blame for who is at fault has been thrown around from time to time.  Or comments to the effect of “Why don’t they just fix it” without the real knowledge of what it might take to do so.  If I am to be fully honest, the fact that I get more complaints then compliments (even when FSH was updating more often) does grate on my patience and willingness to devote time to the community.

To those of you who have offered thanks and appreciation along the way – it is your kind words that make me feel that I have let down the community.

What can we do?

Well I am still around, I just lack the time to develop all the fixes needed.  While I could pass the reigns onto someone else I feel that it would be breaching the trust that has been provided by the community to the FSH team in general.  I know of at least a dozen different occasions where a user has programmed a “FSH” feature and provided the code to those who have asked.  This code always contained malicious code that caused peoples accounts to be emptied of their possessions.

If there are member(s) of the community that feel they have what it takes to take up the mantle of FSH then by all means feel free to contact me.  I can implement fixes that are provided to me to maintain the integrity of the software until such time that I feel the trust of the community is behind the new developer.  This will allow me to put my eyes on each fix before it is implemented to ensure that there is no malicious code.

I have not given up on FSH, it is only a matter of free time available to devote to the code.

#880353 A note from the FSH Developer

Yuuzhan,

Firstly, I just want to chip in here too and say a big thanks from myself and the rest of the FS team. FSHelper has definately improved the game experience for many players and I realise it was a lot of work to build and maintain.

I discussed it with Zorg and one option he suggested was to setup a managed (by us) public repository which would allow contributions to the script from other developers that we then vet and integrate to the project.

However, I feel the best way forward is for us to actually implement the features now, rather than have any external script requirement that some may not be able to use for whatever reason (browser, OS etc.). I'm going to be going through the thread on this later today to tally up which features we should focus on first then take it from there :)

#879749 any composing tips?

Posted by yotekiller on 18 July 2014 - 22:20

I have never done anything except 20XP pots unless it was something for my leveling.  I also instant finish only the 5K and 10K pots but slow and steady has gotten me to composing lvl 15.  Part of your answer will be how much gold you are willing to throw into composing to reach your goal?  Not much for me but a lot for others.  The other part of your answer is that 60XP pots don't just cost 3 times the frags of a 20XP pot, they are much higher.  If you are instant finishing more pots then you are going to burn through your frags (and gold) a lot faster than you might realize.  According to this page - http://wiki.fallensw...ing_XP.2FLevels - you need 20,250XP to get to lvl 10.  If you are starting at nothing it will take you 338 pots at 60 XP each.  338x126 commons each = 42,588 frags (plus the other frags needed for each pot).  Getting to lvl 10 with 20XP pots means you will have to make 1,013 pots at a cost of 6,078 common frags (and no other frags).  Quite a substantial difference but the ultimate decision is yours.  How much time and money do you want to throw at composing to reach your goal?

#879732 Arena Update #4

Posted by Nagoyaka on 18 July 2014 - 21:10

wow, what a way to further devalue the current arena items, can you guys please stop  "improving" things please.... you reiterate the fact that this society no longer has any understanding of what the meaning  of the words improvement or upgrade is.

Now the average joe are able to afford something too :) Not everything is about profit, profit, profit, profit, and profit.

#879565 Fallen Sword Helper down 7/11/14?

Just letting you guys know that I will be doing a post about FSH within the next few days.

#879275 Arena can actully bring in more gold now instead of being as gold sink?

Posted by Zorg on 16 July 2014 - 13:54

Greetings, you're incorrect!

The winner is rewarded 16 tokens. But the "2 runners up"? ... there is only 1 person in 2nd place and 2 people in joint 3rd place.

So your equation would be

16 + 8 + (4 * 2) = 32 tokens

32 tokens * 4k = 128k which is 80% of the entry cost of 160k, resulting in 20% of the gold being sunk as intended.

No, that's not the point. The point is, in the last six hours or so, a group of players decided they'd go for Ruby. It was impressive. Thus, we thought "Why not?". We think it was the right thing to do.

#878913 Missing composing buffs

Posted by BigGrim on 14 July 2014 - 09:36

Hey there.

No buffs are "missing". There's more to implement. We have said this with no concrete timeline. Do we want to get to it? Yes. Is it top priority? No.

We'll get this done as soon as we can.

#877865 suggestions for pricing arena store

Posted by Undjuvion on 08 July 2014 - 15:52

if u look ahead at how this system actually works, with each prize being distributed to so many and not left how shin designed it, it is actually most propable that upping token prices to make the items more valuable will only make it so less can afford to play to build up to those prizes, in effect i see the arena only ever being slow or a rich mans toy if we stick with the system how it is, about all that can be done is WAY lower entrance costs by about 5x and just accept prizes wont be valuable for very long or even really as much BUT thatd let everybody or more people play, many may be more inclined to play if it was cheaper too :)
