Actually I think this could be a pretty fun idea for players in endgame! And a great coin sink! Players could start out with just a basic house with a bed in it for fairly cheap but then they could purchase upgrades and control where to place things in the house!
Upgrades could include things like:
Decorations
tradeskilling equipment
mannequins to display armor/weapons
larger houses
larger/more plots of land (this would be required for building a larger house or for getting a farm... also if we make it so there is a housing district that people can enter and walk through to see other peoples houses? but everyone has a homestone which takes them directly to their house and from the house returns them to where they last were? this would also mean that your ability to expand your house would be based on who has houses around you so people would probably want to save up for enough land plots to build their dream house.)

Your "house" should be located in it's own "realm" as most thing in the game are in there own "realm" so everyone's house is based in it's own realm, and only people in your party can come to your house.
House's should be created using crafting materials, which you give to an NPC. The NPC, "builds" your house. This should require "ALOT" of materials which would mean you actually have to earn your house.
Example, to get your house costs, 1,000 Pynwood Logs, 100 Twisted Pynwood Logs, 500 Lithisle Logs, 50 twisted Lithisle logs, 100 Gold + Other materials perhaps. And each "upgrade" of your house can work in the same way. Obviously you can't hold that many materials at once, so the NPC should accept any amount you give up until the total required.
After you have your house you can add decorations like previously stated, crafting skill workbenchs etc.. all of which can also work like building your house, you pay "materials + currency" to "buy/build" it.
But yes, house's would be a fantastic feature.

hopefully when you say "cosmetic" you don't mean "cash shop"... And I have to say I like Killen's idea! At least the building part! However I think that there should be a realm where we can see the outside of other people's houses but access to houses is restricted based on who the owner allows into the house.

It could be an option in the cash shop to have a 'theme' for your home, i.e. gothic, oriental, tudor, etc. But for those that don't want to spend the money, a basic style would be nice.
There could also be an option for maybe a 'crafting set', meaning if you cook a lot, you could buy a stove and farm plot as a set, or if you do a lot of alchemy, you can buy a 'foragables set' (tiger mushroom patch, shaker plant patch) that you could only harvest once a day or some similar time frame. You would be able to personalize your 'homestead' as much or as little as you like.
There is a lot that could be done with a house option.

So what you're saying here is that someone has to chop down 23,452,435,243,524,523,452,435 trees to make their house.
HELL NO.
IF (probably won't happen) HCS fixed the Twisted Pynwood drop rate, MAYBE this would be a good idea. But until then, I stand by my emphatic HELL NO.
(And housing is almost never within a year of new games' release. So they've got plenty of time to realize materials/crafting/gathering is as broke as the bum you avoid eye contact with on a street corner.)
[Guide] So you want to be a beta tester, eh?

or allow you to select who your "housing" realm is open to.
party, public, private, friends. So people could open a house as a "merchant" shop perhaps?
edit: or crafting area for those who can't afford the purchase their own home crafting areas

It might be fun if you could make small buildings like a shed for storing stuff, turret-like buildings to keep monsters away, or walls to protect you (just walls).
Anyone else got some more suggestions?

The option to have your own mine, forest full of choppable trees, etc. would be great too.
My character's name is Solanacea. I prefer solo play, but feel free to say hi if we cross paths in-game!

That would be cool too. But then they should be in different realm. Cause if everyone owns the forests and mines you won't be able to get resources anymore. But I guess that's not what you meant.
